Total newbie, but have read a few threads on this forum, and although they might be helpful, I still need a little help.

I cannot start the GSX, so far I have done the following:

1) replaced battery
Hear clicking at solenoid, but absolutely nothing from starter

2) Jump solenoid, but still nothing from starter

3) checked that I get 12V to Starter positive terminal and even tried bypassing solenoid, but starter still does not even make a sound.

4) checked and cleaned ground connection on block, all seemed good prior to this, but did it anyways

5) removed sparkplugs and tried turning over the shaft by hand, but it will not move, not even a little

Now, when you cannot turn over the engine, I now it can be a bad thing, however I'm betting that it's the starter that's stuck and won't allow the flywheel to turn. I think it's weird that the starter otherwise would not even make a sound. I read a long thread on there, where a guy had the same problem but basically pulled apart his jetski before finally doing the starter (Which was the culprit).

Ok, my real question is how to remove the starter? There's no damn room... If I'm lucky enough to get the screws off, how many points hold this starter? Attached pics show that I have removed 1 nut on the front of the starter.

I took a picture of what looks like a bracket holding the starter. Is "all" I have to take apart the hex bolt to the bracket at the back or are there more things holding the starter on?

did you check to see if anything is jammed at the impeller? That would prevent anything from turning too.

There should be 3 bolts holding starter that one w allen head and metal brace, and 2 at top of starter or fromt of ski diagonally across from one another. Best bet is download a parts and shop manual for your ski. And buy a lighted mechanics telescoping mirror, will help w a ton of things.

Usually when I needed to remove a starter with the engine still in, I loosened all of the motor mounts and lifted the front of the engine up to get to the last bolts. They are not easy to get to.

With the engine not turning over, I would get the starter out and then try to turn over. Obviously, if it is not something in the impeller than it is something very serious. If the starter is jamming in the flywheel, that can be very serious too. I had a GTI that was doing that and the culprit was the crankshaft. Look at the obvious things first and go from there.

image.jpg If you cant see bolt heads w mirror or feel them, what I had to do was grab thread ends (mine had no nuts were just M8-1.25 allen heads which were stripped) and get the bolt enough turns out until I could grab head w pliers, took forever at .5mm turn at a time but finally got it out. Good thing I did mine looked like thisimage.jpg

OK, I'm still having some issues. Could someone clarify what needs to be taken off before starter will come out.

I have taken off 1 nut in the front. I checked the other side, but there were no nut on that bolt.... I removed the bracket as well. The starter is still not moving at all.

Do I have to screw out the bolt on the front of the starter? I thought the starter would slide off the bolts when the nuts were off?

If so, yes that is a pain, but willing to try. I appreciate a fast response as I am in the middle of this job and just can't figure out what is still holding the starter?

Thanks

Starter is threaded that nut was on for added security and because it was acessable to put one on. You still need to take the other bolt (w no nut) out, thats screwed into the starter.

Crap! I was fearing that. Thanks though for clarifying.... swear words here we go...

Success.... Got the freakin starter out....

Good news, I'm now able to turn the motor over :)

Next question: Starter looks pretty good, however not sure how to test it now that it is out? Also, since I can only logically guess that the bendix got stuck on the flywheel, even if it checks out good, would I still want to put it back when I'm almost certain that it was the culprit to start with?

For a new starter, does anyone know of a good aftermarket? Or OEM? If there are absolutely not other great solutions for starters than Seadoo, well then I guess I will go that route.

Thanks again

You can put starter in vice, hook up jumper cables to ski or car, if its car just leave it off...clamp black to body of starter preferably where you screw your ground wire to, than tap positive post of starter w red jumper lead. If you do get another starter go OEM, chinese ones suck. Try Minnetonka4me for an OEM starter, seems like he's the guy to go to for parts prom some other posts I've read

Honestly don't know. How can I find out. is it written on the jetski somewhere. btw, thanks for fast replies today. Big help actually

From what I am told, I believe it's not limited or anything. just "basic". It just says Rotax fuel injection on the jetksi. Along with GSX

You prob have RFI, if so part number is 278001497. Fuel injected is RFI, so for future when looking for manuals or parts search 99 seadoo GSX RFI

If the starter proves bad in you test, I would consider taking it apart, checking the brushes, wear on the commutator (where the brushes make contact), bushings & bendix. Sometimes you can clean them up & install a brush kit & be back in business relatively inexpensively. you can buy oem, or aftermarket brush kits.

I would trust an old oem unit before a aftermarket.
