1998 Seadoo Speedster totalled, I have questions about wiring using only one engine.

I recently picked up a 1998 Seadoo Speedster that had fallen off a trailer leaving the lake, the hull is destroyed...which is cool with me because I am planning to use one engine and pump in a 16' aluminum bowfishing boat. Not to mention I got the whole thing for well under $1k. I know its probably against what most on this forum stand for but its what I bought it for and for now keeps 2 little 787's from going to the scrap yard. One engine has 155 psi on both cylinders, the other has 160 on 1 and 0 on the other...I will be looking into this as soon as I pull them from the boat.

My question lies in the harness, MPEM, and all associated hardware in the boat is designed to run 2 engines not just one. Would I be better off trying to trade someone out of a full harness for an XP, GSX, SPX, or whatever else the 787 may have come in? I would really rather do away with the DESS because in my application it is going to sever absolutely no benefit but from my reading this is impossible.

I have the key but the beeper is dead so until I can pick one up all I have is a volt meter to read voltage for the beeps, as of right now I am showing one beep when the key is attached and one beep when the start button is pushed. Not real sure but I think its telling me its the wrong key, which could be the case but its the only Bombardier product the guy owned so I am inclined to say I got the right key.

Please feel free to tell me I am stupid or help me get one or both of these things up and running so I can tig up some cool shit to make a Bombardier powered shallow water boat.

It may be easier just to buy a complete wiring setup from any model with a 787. You would need the front ebox, the rear ebox, and the wiring harness.

The mpem you have is worth $800-$1000. Problem with trading is you do not know if that is good.

Try and get the engines turning over with that mpem. Like jet ski goodies said, that mpem is probably worth 3-4 regular 787 96xp mpems which are a dime a dozen and in my opinion overpriced since you can probably get one in the $175 range from somebody who wants to dump theirs

Hi Sturgell

Help me out here I just joined and cant find were to go to post I have looked through the whole site and can only find how to send messages to an indavidual . It seems you have figured it out can you help ? I cant help you with your question but I just picked up a 2001 Chalenger 1800 240 hp with blown motor but the boat is in mint condition , as the story goes the owner did not put oil in on the second season and fried it .so the boat only has 30 hrs on it plastic still on one of the lower seats .do you know were I can get a Motor?

I pulled the MPEM today and I will be sending it off to get it tested and if it comes back good I will be selling it glad you guys let me know how much that thing is worth!!!:thumbsup:

I am going to go ahead to buy a full xp harness and get this thing torn apart and running in my shop floor. I am actually excited I got a boat for a donor because it has tons of nickel and dime stuff that would drive me nuts when I get to the jon. I do wish that it had VTS because I would like to be able to tune pump output angle because I can guarantee I don't mount the pump at the perfect angle.

Just out of curiosity....how does one go about "getting this thing tested"? My guess is that you never hold it in your hands again. Yes it is valuable if working. The reason for that is that BRP does not offer them and they are sensitive to charging while connected, having the terminals crossed, or being jumped off from a boosted source. I hope you sent it off to an honest outfit like Westside Powersports.

I will be sending it to Minnetonka4me on the advice of another SF member to have it tested and the key programmed.

Minnetonka is westside power sports, you're good to go. The best is the business

96 XP800!
Keep the 2 strokes alive!

Yall are misleading this poor guy, don't ya know he has to keep the motors together and put them both into the aluminum boat? Because if one seadoo engine in a Jon boat is cool, think about two of em!

Like was said that mpem to control two engines is super rare and probably worth what you paid for the whole getup.

Minnetonka4me will treat you right. Goes down smooth yet refreshing.

LoL. I really couldn't think of anything. It's too early. where's that coffee?!

re: the speedster, I second the idea using tonka, but honestly, if the engines started I really think (maybe i'm wrong here) that its unnecessary to do a test, the fact that you got them fired up in my mind means your good to go. I've done a couple of speedster/challenger part outs and the MPEMS were always the part I was after, since they generally sell for a nice amount, and if you buy the boat right, you can recapture your expense right there.

regarding the boat itself, save everything, all electronic's, gauges, switches, harness, seats, hatches, pretty much everything you can get off you should remove, categorize, store and re-sell. They don't sell fast, but they sell for good value. I've done very well with my boat part outs, usually it was all profit after the MPEM was sold, so well worth your time.

I never got the engines to turn over using the factory wiring, the mpem would make the beeper been once when I put the key on it but wouldn't let it start. I began taking the engine with good compression out and got called into work (could be several days to weeks.) I also ordered a piece of 5" 6063 tube to build the intake tunnel out of, I still need to buy an alignment tool because it will help with the driveshaft hole in the fabricated tunnel and make sure everything lines up when I build the engine cradle.

When I get the engine out after I get back home I should already have a harness waiting on me so I can get the engine up and running in my shop. I will be posting pictures for everyone's enjoyment.

I think twin jets in a small boat would be fun but impractical, if I need more balls I will use a 170+ hp power plant.

I know it wasn't something that was offered of if it was it wasn't common but I hope to get the VTS to work with the reverse bucket.
