Alright, I am almost there. I have replaced all of the fuel lines, replaced the spark plugs, cleaned the rave valves, and in the process of cleaning the carbs.

The final thing I'd like to do is fix the fuel gauge. It doesn't register at all. It just reads empty at all times. My first thought is that it must be the sending unit. Agree?

Does anyone know how to replace the sending unit or correct the fuel gauge problem in this model (98 GSXL)?

Also, with regard to cleaning the carbs - this has been a headache - the guy doing this for me ripped the gaskets so I need to replace them. Also need a new fuel/accelerator pump. The carb rebuild kits don't include these parts (gaskets and pump) because most people reuse them. And I am having trouble finding replacements. Any suggestions?

Thanks!
Chris

The fuel gauge problem is very normal. It is one of 3 things.

1) the magnets fell out of the float
2) the float sank. (The old foam float doesn't like out new fuel that contains alcohol)
3) the fuse popped in the sender.

Most likely, it's #2. Regardless... buy a new, blow molded float, and replace your old one. AND... while the sender is out, check the fuse.

A OEM Mikuni rebuild kit should have all the gaskets you need. If you bought an aftermarket kit (like Windrosa) pitch it in the trash, and buy Mikuni kits.

As far as the accelerator pump diaphragm... they are a little harder to come by, but if you email me at Junk4aro (at) comcast.net ....... I will tell you where you can get them. (The web site will auto block other sites)

Fuel Gauge

Mine are doing the same thing.

You mentioned the blow molded float, forgive my ignorance, but I'm not sure what you mean. Are you talking about the entire baffle? (From the diagram I don't see that name.)

If u jump the two wires on the harness side the gauge should read full if it does the prob is in the sender ohm the sender if there is no resistance the internal fuse is blown the us a how to on how to fix it

Appreciate the info. I actually bought the Mikuni kit, but it didn't include the mounting gaskets. It had all of the gaskets to put the carbs back together and the new rings, but not the gaskets to mount the carbs back to the engine. Most people say to reuse these gaskets, but the guy who is cleaning the carbs for me ripped the gaskets while removing them.

No big deal. I'll get new one's.

I'll look check those things you mentioned on the fuel gauge issue when I get home.

Thanks!

The GSX and GSXLs are a total PITA to get out. You must take the steering out and out of the way, then unstrap the tank and move the oil tank. Then you can slide it forward enough to squeeze the baffle out of the hull through the steering hole.

Took me 3 hours last time..all other machines take less than an hour.

Oh. well, if that's the case, I'll pass. It still beeps when it's about to run out, at which time I can just switch to reserve fuel and get to the gas station. I have already squeezed inside the tangled mess under the hood to replace all of the fuel lines. I never thought that would have been such a job. I am glad those are finished!

I second this.

Just completed this process on my GSXL about two weeks ago. I even removed my MPEM for a little extra wiggle room to get the gas tank forward.
