1997 Speedster Starting Issues

Hello everyone. I inherited a 1997 seadoo speedster about 2 years ago from a tenant that hadn't paid his rent for about a year. I don't know the history of the boat whatsoever. A lot of pressure from my 13 year old and my twin 10 year olds forced me to pull it out of the garage about (2) weeks ago and see what needs to be done to get this baby running. I downloaded the shop & operating manual and went to work. I did a visual inspection of my boat and comparisons of other 1997 seadoo speedster's on the web. It appears that the hull, interior, controls and engine look to be in pretty good shape on my boat. I installed a new battery, drained a small amount of fuel left in the tank, refueled, filled the oil with (2) gallons of (2) cycle oil. I then followed the starting procedure as laid out in the operation manual. Made sure the the boat was neutral, throttles powered down to idle, installed garden hose to engines, put the key on the post (Heard 2 beeps), ran the fan for (4) minutes, pressed the start button on engine #1 and heard (4) beeps, tried engine #2 and heard the same (4) beeps. Holding either start button down for a few seconds just got me the repeated pattern of (4) beeps. Checked all the fuses which were good. Don't want to dump a lot of money in this boat. Any ideas where to start would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds like the neutral safety switch to me. Try moving the shift lever a little bit to find the "sweet spot," you'll get one beep when you find it, and hit start. The switch is basically a button that gets pushed down by the shift lever. The switch may have gone bad, but I don't know how to test for that. It's located on the control handle assembly if you want to take a peek at it.

Tried it

thanks for the quick response drracela; tried it. I moved the the shifter, got the beep. Still the same (4) beeps when pushing either of the starter buttons. Any other ideas? Thank you.

Sorry man, I'm not very good with the electronics on these things yet. What engines are in that boat?
You could check all the grounds. You could also pull the switch and make sure it's working as it should. Maybe post this again in the two stroke boat section, it'll probably get more views there.

I just read that you can bypass the switch by splicing the wires together. I am not condoning this, and I would wait till someone chimes in on a way to test the switch or what other problems there could be.

A common failure is a control box under the console. Let me find the post and link it for you.
