Good morning. I have a 1997 Seadoo GSX that I just picked up but I am getting no power at all to the DESS or gauges. When I plug the Key/Fob DESS in I don’t hear any beeps and nothing happens when I hit the starter button. I tried to look around for fuses etc and everything seems good. I clean most of the terminals and tightened them and still nothing. I tried to hit the start/stop button 5 times to enter the diagnotic mode but nothing works. Lack of power is pointing me to the MPEM...? Any tips etc?

Thanks for any help.
Pete

Make sure the battery is charged... all the fuses are good... and the power cables are tight/clean. If that all checks... then yes... The MPEM is probably bad.

Is there a way of bench testing the mpem? Even with a bad MPEM shouldn't I be able to get it into diagnostic mode or have it beep at me at all?

Not always. If it's been shorted, or the battery was hooked up backward... some times they really get roasted.

I would get a meter, and make sure you have a good ground, and power getting to the MPEM... and go from there.. Also... when you open the fuse holders... make sure they aren't corroded. I worked on a ski recently, that just stopped running... and when I got into it... I found the 15a fuse holder in the MPEM was rotten. (water got into it) I was able to fix it... but this was something the owner overlooked when he was trying to figure it out.

I will go through the connections again and be sure they are all clean. I do have power going to the MPEM. I say this as the 7.5a fuse for the vts is blown and when I put a new one in it flashes and blows.
I hear of people opening up their MPEMs and replacing diodes when the 5a fuse blows continuously and they are fine after that....My 5a fuse is not blowing so is there another diode or something else like that I could possibly do also?

If the VTS is blowing fuses... that is where you short it. Bad VTS units are known to kill MPEM's.

If you get the board out of all the potting compound... I'm sure you will find the issue. (Either a diode or a power transistor)

As I was cleaning terminals and checking fuses I found the 7.5a to be blown. Tried to insert a new one and it blew instantly. Pulled the cover off the vts and there was no motor in it, just the two wires. I have a motor, not sure if it's working or not that I can install. I'm assuming I can bench test the vts motor.
Ok, I think I might pull the mpem apart and look for something/anything....
