1997 GSI stops running for no apprent reason

I'm having a strange problem with my 1997 GSI (has the DESS). I'm the original owner (low hours and no alterations to electrical system). This started happening only a few weeks ago.
I'm tooling along at approx 4500 rpms. The engine stops running just like I had pulled the lanyard. Instruments go blank. I can pull and replace the lanyard and it cranks and runs fine until the next time it happens ( maybe 2 hours or maybe 2 days ). Very intermittent failure. I've checked for the common things (loose connections etc).

Anyone ever had this problem or any suggestions? I'm at a lose at this point. Will keep riding and hope the problem goes away or fails completely.

Have you cleaned the contacts on the post and inside the lanyard key?
