I usually do a day worth of riding and when I first put into water it wont run full throttle until after being warmed up for about 20 minutes. It will only go about quarter throttle and feel like its missing. Then out of nowhere it will go full throttle and run perfect and fast the rest of the day. It makes no sense to me. Any ideas on what I can do to change that? Could it be plugs/wires? or could it be the computer or temp sensor? Please Help me thanks

My 96GSX did the same thing, it sorta felt like it was running on one cylinder, it turned out to be the voltage regulator/rectifier. To check it disconnect the red wire, if the problem clears up replace the voltage regulator. When you disconnect the red wire you won't be charging the battery, so do it as a test only.

The voltage regulator/rectifier is located in the front E-box.

If it is regulator/rectifier how come after so many minutes it will just jump up and run fine the rest of the day?

Regulators do very strange things. My 96 xp would run great for the first 20 minutes then wouldnt rev, like it was on a rev limiter. Wouldn't even plane. It's a simple diagnostic. I also noticed mine had more power after replacing it.

Yup the Rectifier will do crazy random stuff. You can also unhook the red wire on the rectifier to test, it wont charge the battery but will tell you if theres an issue with it.

There are a few things you don't want to be cheap. The regulator is one of them. They fail somewhat often and can do really screwy things to the run-ability of the ski. Another is the starter. If yours fails, do NOT buy an aftermarket one. Rebuild your OEM starter.

So do you think I should just replace the rectifier without testing it?? It's is 20 degrees outside so I really can't test it on the water lol.

Probably not a bad idea, I like to keep and extra one on hand, it might save a ruined weekend.

BTW, it's in the 60's here today, I'm ready for spring.

So I got the rectifier today. I was wondering how you know which yellow wires go where. There is 1 red and 3 yellow wires? Any directions on how to hook it up. I noticed one yellow wire has red stripe and one with yellow with black stripe then one all yellow one. Do I just match them up? Thanks

As I recall mine just had 4 yellow wires (no stripes) on one red wire. And it didn't make any difference on the yellow wires. I've got an old one in the garage, I'll take a look, be right back.

Added, the one in my garage, it's OEM has no stripes.

So I can connect any yellow ones together? And the red one to the red?

You'll have three yellow wires coming from the stator housing, connect each one of them separately to the three yellows on the rectifier in any order, it doesn't matter b/c it's a 3-phase AC circuit. Mount the rectifier to a good ground, or it might have a black ground wire for ground, and the red wire as it was before, red goes through a fuse to the battery.

You can mount it back in its original location, on the plate inside the electrical box. That plate will have some black wires attached to it, that will be your ground. Just be sure that there is no corrosion on the plate so you can get a good ground.

There no black wire just 3 yellow and a red? What did you mean by mount the rectifier to a good ground?

Okay, no black wire for ground. Although there are 4 wires involved, there are 5 electrical connections. The case ground is the 5th electrical connection, through the mounting screws to a grounded mounting plate. I'm just saying, make sure there is a good electrical connection for the rectifier case ground, it can't be just lying around the bilge without this grounded mounting otherwise it won't work.

Good luck! :)

Rectifier is in the front box.

Look for the yellow Square in the top Right corner of my pic. Black wires just below are the grounds on the plate that the REC. mounts to.

this should be fixed, but also, don't run your ski WOT until it's properly warmed up. the pistons are actually manufactured out of round, so they become round as they heat up. even though it's a 2 stroke with oil being shot in it vs sitting in the oil pan at start... it's best for any machine to have a few easy rounds to warm up, then feel free to hit it :)
