This motor won't run. I bought it not running. I ran it with no spark plugs in to get out what I thought was water. It was very oily water. I took the head off to fund lots of oil in the cylinders next to the exit pipe. It's flooding the motor. The previous owner said he used both mixed gas and the self oil feeding pump. This is a SBC built 717 motor. What could be the issue?20160223_180147.jpg

The worn inner crank seals allow oil from the rotary gear chamber to escape to the crankcase. Cheap outboard oil makes this happen more sooner then later. Clear it out and get the correct oil in it and it may run for a while. Water is a killer though because there are needle bearings in there that will rust up.

Yep... what he said. It could also be the RV seal, and that can be changed.

But... as said above... clear it out... get it to start... and you may go a while before it refills. I've seen some that weren't too bad, and it was ok all summer. (refilling over the winter) But, I've seen it bad too, where the next day, the engine is full.

This is all oil from the oil tank that mixes with the gas? I guess it being 2 stroke the only oil it gets is the oil from that correct? I only ask because if it escapes from that area would it need to be filled up again? Luckily, with all the oil, I don't think it rusted any. I am not sure there was a lot of water.

The oil lines that inject into the incoming fuel and air is not the problem. It's the larger one that feeds the rotary gear chamber under the intake manifold. If you have one that refills again overnight then you can put a 1/2" ball valve in that line and turn it off when the ski is not in use. That will keep it from draining your tank all the time. The real solution is a new crankshaft but if it runs well otherwise it can be "milked" this way indefinitely. Sometimes the problem goes away just by reviving the ski and getting rid of the TCW-3 oil.

Now that is a golden idea. The ball valve would work. I guess those that do the mix only block off still leave oil in the tank so it feeds into the crank am I correct?

If the machine sat a long time dont get crazy. Clear it out, get it started, then let it sit a few days and see if the engine fills up rapidly or not.

Just an update. I cleaned the oil out and while rolling it over the thing stopped turning over easy. The starter can't roll it over but barely without the plugs or head on it. I can't roll it over with my hands any longer either.

No the oil that was in the bottom of the crankcase gets trapped between the top of the piston and the cylinder. Pull the plugs out and ground the leads then spin it over. Be sure to have an old t-shirt or something to lay over the holes or the oil will blow up like a geyser and soak your face and hair. This process has to be repeated until you get it running. Then it's gonna smoke for a while like crazy.

It sounds like something is frozen now. Since you pulled the plugs, and the starter can barely crank it, I would say some bearings have bit the dust since you said it could be a water/ oil mix.

When you pulled the plugs, was it covered in oil?

I spun it with the head off to open it up more. Is that a bad thing to do. I didn't ground the spark plugs, just set them off to the side. Why ground them?

Oil shot up everywhere so I just stood back and let it flow. It just seems to be almost locked up. The starter rolls over but only barely. It did this earlier also but then freed up.

Save a lot of time and guessing- been there, done that on this exact same issue. Remove the motor and get it replaced or rebuilt. Keep the oil injection so you dont have to premix the gas. Do it now before summer hits and your down with a non running ski ;)

You should remove the pump to confirm that is not the issue or a contributing factor. If not, then attack your engine.
