I just purchased a 1996 GTX. The center info gauge LCD is very hard to read. Any help on fixes or replacements. I found an OEM gauge, it's a bit more than I want to spend right now. $436. Thanks.

burned gauge unreadable

If its just a Readability fix you need, I can guide you, but if its internally electrically
bad, you will need another gauge. Bills86e

The film will only repair the unreadibility of the gauge,if anything is electrically wrong with the gauge this will not fix your problem.

This fix takes about an hour. You can also select if you want black on silver or prefer a silver on black

On the back of the gauge there are three screws, take those out, then the stainless steel ring will come off. Push the grommet with the wires back into the gauge, now for the fun part, you have to remove the trim ring on the top of the gauge that holds the housing and plastic cover together.

The best tool for this is a staple remover, get up under the edge of the ring and start prying it up, you have to work it all the way around the trim ring then the trim ring should pull off. Now the gauge will come apart. You will find four screws that holds the face onto the gauge, remove those, then remove the face. You should now be looking at the LCD screen and the crinkled up film. Use a straight edge razor blade and carefully remove all of the old film.

Use some alcohol and a paper towel to remove any glue residue from the screen,it needs to be spotlessly clean. Now for the really fun part, the new polorazition film has to go on in a certain orientation, every time you flip it 90 degrees it changes from white face with black numerals to black face with white numerals.

What you do is hook the gauge back up to the boat, every single wire. Put your lanyard on and put you film up to the gauge. You can clearly see what happens when you turn it 90 degrees now. Place it in the orientation you desire and mark it,it will be rectangular, after you cut it.

So now there is no possible way to put it on wrong. Peel off the backing and stick it to the gauge, carefully working out all the air bubbles as you go. Now put your gauge back together and use a small amount of clear silicone around the edge of the gauge face to seal it to the plastic cover. Refit your trim ring, the hardest part is recrimping the retaining band.

If you get a size of the polarization film that can cover the whole guage lens ( the diameter of the housing) it should work.

Post cost, my guess $25. Best of luck, Bills86e

Thanks. That sounds easy enough. I like $25 better than $438. I'll give it a shot and let you know how it turns out.

Quick question. Is it the Light control film or the Polarizing laminated film. Also, how big of a sheet do you think it will take?

Gauge film

I was contacted by the tech department at Edmond Optics. He thought the product they sell would be too heavy. Have you tried this before with good results and if so, what exactly did you buy from them?

About four years ago the problem was reappearing on forums as to a guy haveing the fix was offering it on eBay. No body could read the gauge, so a few of us found out the trick. The "fix" was 1/2 price, we thought we could do even better. I have passed the info on for several years as DYI, a coupla bucks. Good Luck. Other than
"thanks Bill" I kept no record. Buy a small of each, let us know, I'll update and see
if the forum Moderators accept this post as a "Sticky", and include your result, with
your permission, of course. Let us know. Bills86e

Lets try it!

Sounds good to me. I'm always up for a challenge. I'll do it and let you know. Thanks for the help.

Please post up a pic of your gauge, Please. It may help others. We would like to see a finish pic, and any other input you had to fixing the gauge. Thank You! Bill

The Fix

Just ordered the gauge fix kit from the seadoosource.com. I will take before and after pictures. Thanks for all the help Bill.

It's fixed

I completed the gauge repair last weekend. Of course I forgot to take pictures. The kit I ordered was easy to use. Takes a little time, but it wasn't bad. Unhooked the wiring harness, got the gauge out easily. The only bad thing is having to cut that retaining ring off. The gauge looks and operates like a new one. A lot of elbow greese to get the old adhesive off the LCD screen though. with the instructions provided, you can't mess it up. Thanks for the help everyone. Sorry again for no pictures. By the time I realized I forgot my camera, I was already at the lake.
