Picked up a 95 xp with a great hull for cheap.. had a blown up 717. Will my 1997 787 fit without modifications????

thanks

717s are good motors too, just rebuild that sucker and put a factory pipe performance exhaust on it! I hear that gives them a good 10 horse extra or so.

conversion has been done multiple times, but its not THAT common since there are so many 96 xp hulls out there with blown engines :) first step is fiberglass, not sure if anything needs to be changed on the drive, then swapping out electronic's of course. i'm sure there is a how-to out there. so now you have 3 hulls sitting in the back yard ?

It's not worth the effort unless you are going to a 951. In My Opinion. The 717 is a more reliable motor then 787. Fix the motor in the 717 ride it for a bit and sell it. Then with that money buy a hull for 787.

Yes 3 skis... LOL

While anything can be accomplished with enough time and money, you're going to be far better off to find a ski with a 787, the reasons being:

The mounts are completely different, you will have to do quite a bit of fiberglass work to create new mounting points, and even if you can accomplish this you will probably have problems aligning the motor to the pump.

The motors mount differently, the 717 is at a 90 degree angle to the hull, while the 787 is at a 45 degree angle.

Nothing matches up, exhaust is different, carbs. are different, etc. etc.

You will need a different wiring harness and different electrics, most if not all 787's require a front and a rear E-box while the 717's only has a front E-box, different MPEM's

Okay I had no idea it was that much work... I was thinking I could make new mounts then just swap the entire motor and exhaust I have from the ski with the 787.

The ski with the 787 is reparable, but this new to me xp has a hulll which is in better shape. So I was wanting to swap if possible. I guess ill just use the 97 sxp hull with the 787 and part out the 94 and 95

On another note is there any way to check the MPM or whatever they call the control box without an engine in the boat. I dont want to sell somethign which I cant proves is good or bad

someone once said that there was a company that made a plate that bolted into the 718 mounts and mated up with the 787, but finding one nowadays would be tough

I thought about possibly trying to make something like that. I have darn near a full machine shop at my house so makign it would not be an issue. It would just be the alignment which worries me.

Plus I didnt know the electronics were different. I thought it was a simple engine swap.

Out of curriosity... If I were to either glass in new mounting points or make some sort of adapter is there any interference in the exhaust tube..... Just from a quick glance the hulls look pretty much identical so I wouldnt think so.. but I have not been able to inspect side by side.

thanks

You probably would be better off just repairing the hull the 787 is in. is it sea worthy? Post some pics of the damage. A little filler sanding and gelcoat sounds like a way better option to me.

Well....... you all are as expected correct. I was able to compare the hulls side by side and from the exterior they look the same... however when you get in the hull I see where the differences are. It would take a lot of work to convert.... Looks like the old beater hull will have to work unless I can snag a good 800 xp cheap and fast....

Ohh well lots of parts to sell
