I just started working on a 95 Sportster project. She's been sitting awhile, but had the motor rebuilt 3 yeasr ago with less than 2 hours on it. I just put a new battery in it, but nothing. (The horn blows) Are there fuses or should I start at the MPEM? How do I check that out?:ack:

there are some fuses either under the hood, if you lift out the buket... or they may be in the box with the MPEM. From 95 to 96 they made changes... so check both places.

I know you said you put in a new battery... but double check that it has a good charge.

Your 95 doesn't have the DESS system, so I'm sure you will just find a loose or broken wire... or a bad solenoid, or starter.

does the landyard post have a metal ring around it, with a metal "dot" in the middle, if so, then you have DESS

95 doesn't have the DESS, you just need to put the key on, and make sure the ignition key is turned on, also you need to make sure it's in Neutral..

How do I know?

How do I know if it has an MPEM or DESS. It does have a lanyard if that means anything, but I didn't check to see if it has a metal ring yet. I know that some '95s had MPEMs.:ack:

They all have a mpem or computer, the 95 doesn't have DESS or a special key needed other than the on/off key, looks like a key, and the lanyard, that goes on near the stop/start buttons..

So first things first

Since I am getting nothing when turning the key. I'll start by checking the wires and connections. Then the fuses in the gray box, how do I check the computer or MPEM? Going out to find my shop manual now...

well you shouldn't get anything when you turn th e key to on, only when you push start button with the boat in neutral..

Next Step

I checked all the fuses and conections, but still nothing. Blower motor works and horn blows. It used to beep when the key was turned on, but now nothing not even a click. I talked to the former owner and he said that he had jumped it before to start, but it ran after he did that.

I replaced my battery last summer. After hooking the new battery up it wouldnt start. Couldnt figure out what went wrong. When I went to take the battery back out I realized that I didnt hook up all the wire to the battery. I would double check and make sure all wires were reconnected.
