RXT X that I bought spring of 2015 and has run like a top since I bought it.
Couple weeks ago at the lake ran great and at some point my son limps in with smoking
and bought half power.
Immediately towed it in thinking Blown Supercharger for sure. Took it to guy that has
865-Customz not a stealership. Put the pressure gauge to it, pistons 2 and 3 are good, piston 1
is dead! Yikes! Calls bout a week later, says SC is fine valve appears to have overheated and blown!?
After delving further about a week later says not good, needs new short block or rebuild about $2500-2800!

Asking you guys who are experts, is this pretty much all you can do? Are there any other options?
Will be picking ski up cause can't spend this right now. Maybe over the winter.

Just really depressing cause me my son and his buds really liked the ski. :puke:

Something is not right,,,, if the valves "over heated and blown" then how would a short block solve this issue. Valves are in the head. Short block would not contain valves,,,

I think I'd get a second opinion.

starting with usual disclaimer

"not a tuner"

With that said, most times i've read a write up about a blown valve they were talking about what i'd consider "catastrophic" failure 2-3K in damage resulting in serious expense that can include a cracked block, etc... < I believe that happens about 20% of the time, and the rest It can just be a new head/cylinder/new valves. < still not cheap.

Even when you have the newer valves which decreases the likelihood of such failure, it doesn't eliminate it.

My post wasnt that clear, he said that piston was also fried so would have to re bore, replace valves, etc. or get new short block?
I am no mechanic so....?

BTW,, the 08 has a weaker tunnel than the 07 and 09. Are you familiar with this issue?

Yes, I have watched repair videos on how to reinforce with fiberglass and epoxy. That will be a winter project if I can get the thing fixed and running???

owning the same model 08' I inspected my tunnel carefully from both sides, found no issues and moved on, I saw no reason to dive down that rabbit hole unless I saw something that made me worry.

However, if the engine is coming out.... might be a perfect winter project as a preventative measure.

No reason to NOT get a 2nd opinion on the valve/cyl but I suspect that you just got unlucky and your mechanic is giving you correct info.

Thinking about cutting my loses and selling my RXT as is and putting $$ into newer ski.
What would it be worth with everything good but engine, SC and all electronics, hull like new, nice Hustler trailer too?? Just curious.

You would basically need to deduct $3k from what it's worth.

I think you'd need to deduct 3.5K-4K ... it will cost time & labor to replace. Running that is a $6K ski if its 9/10 on condition.

hard to put a dollar figure since I don't dabble in the broken 4 stroke market much, but i'd guess $2500 "as is" if your patient? $1500 if your in a hurry? < total guess there

Skis like yours sell for $1500 around these parts.... I've bought a few of them. Contact me if you wish to sell it.

Jet skis can be a real headache sometimes . I totally agree with you offing it to get newer ski . They get to a point where they will nickal dime you to death . I have bought and sold 5 skis all together. I will say it again when you buy used you have to go through that ski with a fine tooth comb. A lot of times people are always wanting to unload there problem child jet ski.

Personally I probably would fix the problem as economically as I can . Then I would off it

Dealer gave me real good money for my 2008 rxt x . And you know what I trailerd it to him in pieces he had to install jet pump supercharger drive shaft bellows .
