Recently, my Challenger 180 has begun dropping into reverse about half the time I start... I'll confirm it is solidly in neutral, start the engine, and then all of the sudden the handle will drop into reverse. Never did this before this weekend as I recall.

Any thoughts?

Well i dont know your boat but the older Doos have a looking mechanism on the reverse bucket to prevent that from happening. May be your is bad. Check it out.

It does sound like the locking clip is broken off the bucket cable. It should lock in with a clunk it is in any position.

The locking clip is definitely gone. The holes that hold the locking pin are not broken out (maybe a little damaged), but what exactly is supposed to keep that clip in there? Is it threaded?

installed

I got the parts. Pin, spring, clip. Mounted the spring an clip and tapped in the pin. I marked the pin's half way point so I counld tell when it went in enough (clip has an opening to view the mark).

I shifted into forward gear and the bucket locked with (with the clip).

That's it.
