Have a 97 challenger 1800, need to have in neutral to get the double beep and start. Need to drop to idle to go into forward or reverse. Dropping into idle causes the motors to die. Then need to go back to neutral and try again. Hoping to fine a way to fire the engines up when in forward or reverse. Anyone found a way around this?

Yeh, could put the idle up to about 2, again. Just thought there may be a simple way to disable, evidently not.

There are many other reasons other reasons why it is not idling/running properly. You may need to rebuild carb, check/replace fuel lines, replace fuel filter, could even be as simple as bad fuel. Check compression, replace spark plugs?.....go over the entire maintenance checklist.

Changing idle position could be avoiding something more serious that should be dealt with.

These items have all been done at least once over the years. Sometimes dialed in, sometimes not so much. Just installed the rebuilt motor I had setting on the bench, hadn't had it on the water yet so it may be dialed in. The other engine has a leaking oil seal in crank and installed valve in rotor oil line. After setting awhile, need to blow out oil out of that one before it will idle. Just thought it might be nice to start while in gear occasionally, especially when backing off the trailer to start the day.
