hey all..

Have a 2004 GTX supercharged 4-tech (yellow & black) and looks like i might potentially have a big problem..

the other weekend - took it out for a spin.. after 5 mins the warning came on and i got an "oil" msg on the dash with the little beeper screaming it's head off..

came in to shore and checked the oil to find the engine was bone dry which was odd considering i checked it only the other week.. topped it up with 1.5ltrs and it was just showing on the gauge - so put another 2ltrs in and we were bang on the right oil level..

took off again and this time within 50mtrs of the shore i get the dash screaming, warning light on and the oil msg again...

back in to shore to check it again only to find that all the oil's now sitting in the bilge or bottom of the hull...

Have checked what i can from the top and it's all dry, so i can only assume it's leaking from somewhere underneath.. i'd seen on here about some potential rubbers failing but would like some expertise on the above before i go any further with potentially pulling the motor out as it could just be an easy fix..

Pleased to hear anyones thoughts / ideas...

WOW !!!

Sorry to hear that, but I have no idea of where to start on that one.

Chester may have seen this. You may want to PM him.

This is where one of those scopes with the flexible 3 foot camera would come in handy, if you could borrow or rent one from somebody. At any rate though, even if you can find where the leak is coming from under there you're almost certainly going to have to pull the engine out to get to it.

Sure sounds like you lost the oil fast though... 3.5 litres to fill it up means it was almost out of oil.

Here's an idea that just occurred to me though: on automobile engines there is an oil pressure sensor on the engine that sometimes can fail and then oil gets pumped out under pressure right thru the sensor (but only when the engine is running, as it takes oil pressure to force the oil past the failed sensor). These 4-TEC engines have a similar sensor that tells the computer if the oil pressure is ok when the engine is running... I do not know which of the many sensors it is on this engine though.

However, if you fill the engine up to full with oil and let it sit, it should not leak down... then when you start the engine, it should start to lose oil pretty quickly. This would suggest to me that it's that oil pressure sensor that's leaking oil.

It can be difficult to see the oil running down the side of the engine from that sensor (whichever sensor it is, idk), and it'll only be leaking oil when the engine is running. Can you test to see if the engine oil level holds stable while the engine isn't running, and that it only loses oil while running? You'll need to use a bright flashlight and look closely at the engine sensors while the engine is running to see the oil leaking out... the sensor will still work electronically, but it's internal seal will have failed and it will leak oil like a stuck pig when the engine is runnng.

Good luck!

Hey guys -- I am having the same issue with my 2006 GTX LTD ski. I am going up to the lake this weekend and hope to work on it then. Was there any solution found to this issue? I'd appreciate any insights.

Thanks

Well here it is August 2012 and I have the identical oil leak into the bilge problem. I have a 2006 GTX SC that runs perfectly except for the oil leak issue that recently developed. Any suggestions what might be causing this problem?

So far I haven`t seen any of the sensors leak, like the old Chevy ones used to do...
areas to "check"
PTO boot/seal - PTO cover
Oil cooler O rings
Valve cover
PTO rear cover gasket
front cover

It's at the dealers now for repair and they suspect the problem is the bellows. I think that's where the driveshaft connects to the engine.

The bellows is where the driveshaft enters the jetpump... I do not see what that could have to do with the engine leaking oil though. More likely it's the pto seal that's leaking, where the driveshaft enters the back of the engine.

Took ski in today to have the oil leak evaluated. All fixed, I had a bad bellows, its the seal/bearing that comes out of the engine that the driveshaft connects to. They said they replace about 15 of them a year. They also replaced my wear ring. Should be ok for the rest of the season and more.

ahhh see, that was first on the list! Cool! now go and enjoy riding!:cheers:

The part they replaced was called "ball bearing with bellow" and cost me $125.54 and $170.00 labor to change it out. They refer to it as the "bellows" and the part number is 420832648. They also gave me a break on the parts and the dealership has always treated me extremely well.
