Weired issue that has started i have an 02 gtx 4tec non sc that will start on land no problem. Once in the water it seems to have a problem starting. It will eventually start run absolutly fine with no problems. Ive been reading alot of people talk about a starter relay being a common problem anyone have any thaughts.

If the starter is engaging well and staying engaged while you press and hold the starter button, then the solenoid is good.

I would do a compression test. In 2-strokes, this is a very common complaint. They lose some compression and have a hard time starting in water. Not as common with the 4-tec engines. Also, the 4-tec engines LOVE quality spark plugs. I'd replace them.

It could be a weak battery and or high resistance in the starter circuit that only affects it during an increased load (in the water). Are the battery terminals clean and free of corrosion? In salt water use, it's very common for the positive cable to corrode under the insulation at the terminal.

When it wont start it just cranks over. Mechanic came and checked it all out and basically looked at me like I'm crazy charging system works find and battery is fine completely baffled. I just hate being on a ski I have to wonder if its going to leave me stranded.

Ok. So when it won't start, it will crank over, and the information center is functioning? Did the mechanic check the fuel pressure? What was the reading on the gauge?

Problem is we can never get it to duplicate the problem. But yes it cranks just fine the info center is functioning and I did a new fuel pump like 3 months ago.

I get a hard start on my '15 gti after hot soak, does temp seem to have any bearing for ya like if you run it for a while vs cold start?
