I had a piece of metal in my stator/magneto area that would ground the stator out only sometimes. it would do this sometimes with the engine not moving, and other times the engine needed to be moved. I guess it depends on where the metal piece is lodged or still jumping around.

When it starts acting up, start playing with choke to see if it's different (this can tell you if it is lean). When you also know its acting you can try with the gas cap off incase the fuel tank isn't venting properly.
