I have 2 1996 SPI's, both are in great condition expect for the OEM 2 piece wear rings just came apart, looks like the black seperated from the fiberglass portion. I bought 2 new SBT 1 piece rings and installed them but I did not use a neoprean seal around the pump, just siliconed the whole housing where it mates to the hull, waited a week then went for a test ride... Horrible cavitations on both most of the time, they will still get on plane but any kind of slam acceleration or spin out is denied.

I recently just read the wear ring how-to by Dr. Honda and im now curious if you don't silicone at all and just use the seal? What else could cause the caviation and lack of pickup with a brand new setup besides it sucking air, im guessing?

Also I have to take the ride plate off of one in order to break the one pump loose where the previous owner had so much silicone on them that I couldnt get the pump off. One thing to note is they both had neoprean seals on them before and tons of silicone and they ran like a charm...

you need the neoprene seal bud, and also, need the oem wear ring..(last 3 digits are 290) SBT ones are junk.

Alright, thats what I figured as far as the seal but didn't think anything SBT made was junk but I'll take your word on that one for sure. What about silicon, reapply with the seal or scrape off all the old and just use the seal?

read and encountered same situation, install'n customers' supplied rings, from them. With the price being almost the same, its worth knowing, your installing them (rings), that are manufactured by the builder....however, i've used, with great success, the WSM rings.

As for using sealant, its a must, around the protruding water fittings, off the pump, or else, it'll leak.
