xp 951 lost revs suggestions ?

My 98 xp 951 has had about 6 tanks of gas through it after a complete rebuild - crank to raves.

Revs to 7200 rpm except just taken it out and on the way back wouldn't rev past 6k. One burst was doing 7.2k - two minutes later would only rev to 6k. No spills no spins no incident - just wouldn't rev out

Any suggestion of what to check ?

Check your raves, the water regulator... and check the compression. Then, let us know what you find.

sorted the problem - magneto had come loose so timing was out, easy fix just a pain on newly built engine

Cool...what lead to checking under the mag housing?

I'd like to say i checked under mag because i ace mechanic but honestly there was a hell of squealing noise from the front of the motor when trying to start.

Chewed out the flywheel and the the woodruff key but luckily sourced a very cheap replacement locally
