Greetings,

I just picked up a 98 Speedster off of Craigslist.

Read up on here first - did the water test, 4 people in the boat, checked all systems, saw 47mph on the GPS (not WOT - still had a ways to go, got a little bumpy in the chop)
Bilge pump not working - seller agreed to replace.

Did a compression check myself - my gauge is an old snap-on one that is pretty good, read 150+ across all cylinders, this seemed kind of high to me for a 12+ yr old boat but it sure runs nice, idles smooth, comes up through the rpms without a hitch, think it's a runner.

Seller says he got it from someone down in Lake Havasau (sp) 4 years ago and ony used it sporadically, seemed legit to me.

Boat is in pretty good shape, some nicks and dings (bottom is really clean - don't think they were beaching it much) Interior is a little rough - sitting out in the Sun at Havasau for 7 or 8 years I expect. Not too faded but a number of rips/cracks in the seats - but it is all there. Gel coat is a little oxidized - I'll be getting after that in short order.

Anyway got two questions:

1. Owner says he always used the BRP synthetic oil until the last trip last year to Havasau - they didn't have the Seadoo oil so he used an "equivalent" - says he thought it made the boat "smokier" and wouldn't use it again. Most of it is still in there - should I worry about this? Does it need to be drained and replaced or can I just leave it and add the correct stuff as this stuff is consumed? (does not seem that "smoky" to me)

2. Those of you that have towers on their 1998 Speedsters - point me in the direction of a good source for an aftermarket tower that works well with the boat (I have a Bimini and would like to keep it on if possible).

Thanks

SC

I would drain the oil just to be sure and use your favorite oil that meets the specs. Good choice of boats. There are lots of threads here on them,

Hello and welcome.
Yes two stokes smoke, sometimes a lot especially at idle if you premix
You only want to use API-TC and NOT the TC-W3 two stoke oil. just read label...
You may want to flush oil tank if PO put the TC-W3 oil.

I think there was a thread a while back someone put one on. Not sure if your model though.

edit: here you go. not sure if this is what you mean
