So I've got another post out there asking for advise about which path to take moving forward with my engine (here), but I also obviously want to learn from this experience and avoid it again.
I rode this 94 SXP right up on to the trailer last fall. I had looked up a few sites with instructions on winterizing and did some basic stuff. Ran it a little and revved it on the trailer to try to get as much water out as I could, got some fogging oil and shot it in the plug holes, grounded the plugs and turned over a few times to work it in. Also topped off both fuel and oil tanks, added fuel stabilizer and cleaned out.
I then took the battery out, covered it and tarped it, and took it to my family's farm and stored it in the barn for the winter.
Brought it back a few weeks ago, took the plugs out and looked things over, tried to start and never really got it running. So I started tearing things out and once I pulled the jugs, I find a bent con rod.
So my assumption is hydro lock, but what fluid was above the rings? Unignited fuel, water, oil? Clearly, the "several hundred" dollar question is how did I manage to do this to myself and how to avoid moving forward? Please (continue to) educate me. I've learned a ton from this tear down and from this forum, but I guess this is the most important question.
