I have a 1998 sporster 1800. Bought the boat last year. Weed grates were gone probably accidentally pulled off at the boat ramp. Had an issue with grassy weeds affecting performance above 10 mph. Got boat back and my son pulled a hanfull of grassy stuff away from the right intake. Flushed engine and everything was fine. Do you guys recommend that I have the grates replaced. 90% of my boating is in a clean lake in Maine. Problem was when I went to other more shallow side of lake. Also is it likely that these weeds can get sucked in further and cause more problems. Thanks guys. Jim

The thrust will pull weeds into the pump with or with out the grate. The grate will prevent plastic bottles or other floating debris like sticks getting into the expensive impeller area.

Makes sense.

I believe it is a bit involved to install new grates. I'll probably just go with the take a chance attitude. Thanks for the info Karl. If you read this do you know how to go about purchasing a backup lanyard. I only have one. Sometimes when I try to post a new thread I get the unable to perform screen.:)

I think our sister company has one ...click the "parts" link at the top of the page. You still need to get it programmed at the local seadoo dealer.

Just watch what you run over ...impellers aren't cheap.
