Wear Seal or something elce ?

Hi All Newbie here. I recently bought a RX Di 1200cc . Put it in the water and did not get much more than idle speed. I later contacted the seller, and found i hand the learner key.... lol yea stupid i know.
So .. after all that i finally got the right key.. problem is : i found alot of plastic in the impeller. After stripping i found the wear seal all chewed up. I have now ordered a new one, but my question : just not having the wear seal would it just stay at idle speed, or could there be more wrong ? impeller is all good. The seller getting paperwork together says he just spent R15 000 ( ca $2000 US ) for major service.

I believe you have a 951cc motor in that RX. Will the engine rev up normal but not move faster than idle speed? Or are you getting low revs and low speed in the water?

The wear ring being chewed up will cause severe cavitation and a drastic loss in speed on the water. The motor will still rev but you will have no forward propulsion. Like a slipping clutch in a car

The clearance of the wear ring is crucial in regards to speed and performance.

The gap from the impeller to the wear ring should not be larger than the thickness of a dime.

Replace the wear ring. As Coastie stated, the gap should be no more than the thickness of a dime. Also, I would get a compression reading since its a new to you ski.

I'm not necessarily recommending this, because I just put one on one of my ski's this year, but so far so good. A delrin wear ring is a one piece design and shouldn't de-laminate like a stock wear ring does. Also they're a little cheaper, and OEM on 4-teks.

There are a few things that our ski much prefer to keep OEM. Solenoids, starters and wear rings.
The fact the ring is an OEM in the 4-tec's and Lou has used them would be good enough for me,,,,

I prefer the 1 piece SBT wear ring myself. At the very least the impeller won't get destroyed like the stock one does when it delaminates.

I think the issue that everyone is concerned with is how long does it last compared to OEM. Time will tell, but then again all the new skis use them as OEM so it must be ok
