First of all I would like to say i looked at most all of the posts on here before I decided to post this and there is a wealth of information on here about troubleshooting, repairs, and general things to look for. I am very mechanically inclined but do not want to spend my time working on the ski's constantly either. After reading on here it looks like these skis have a useful life before they require a rebuild. It also seems like a pair of carb'ed ski's make the most sense from a long-term ownership standpoint. With all these being said I have the folowing questions. I know that the ski of choice seems to be the 96 XP with the 787 rotax motor. I am wanting to get something a little bigger and more stable so I am looking at the 98-99 Limited model ski's with the 951 motor. Here are the questions:

I am wanting to get a 98-99 GTX Limited as the first ski due to having a family.

Is there a year that is better than the other?
Was there any problems with these years in the GTX line? If so what year should I look at?

The second ski I would like to be an 98-99 XP or GSX Limited but I do not understand what the difference is between a GSX and an XP.
I would like to be educated on this differences and which you guys feel is a better all around model and year.
Once again if there is a problem with the year, what year should I be looking at?

What is the hour range on the 951 that I need to start preparing for a rebuild?

What compression should they be at?

Any other things I need to be aware of?

I understand to try and get as much history as possible, and the condition of the hull would kind of be indicative of how the ski was cared for but I am open to all things to look for and the right kind of questions to ask.

Guys thanks for your help and I look forward to getting help from you guys on repairs and upgrades in the future after I make my purchases.

I appreciate the help ahead of time.

If you looking for reliability you probably should go with the 787 series ski's. While the 951 has more power, You will be doing more maintanence on them because they are more finicky.

x2 - I would give up a couple mph for the 787's reliability. Look for a 96-97 GTX.

The GSX is more of a cruiser, XP more of a sport. I personally prefer the GSX - still small enough to have fun on, yet big enough to not get beaten up in the chop.

i personally own a GSX Limited and it is great! The XP to me personally is a single person waterski, i can ride two people on my GSX but i know for sure the GTX would give u more stabillity. I am also a family man and also looking for a GTX for the stabillity factor. I LOVE the 951 engine for the power, so in my opinion definetly 99-01 GTX with the 951. GOOD LUCK!!!
