I have a 98 Speedster and I'm looking at installing a tower.
Does anyone have any recommendations, words of wisdom or caution. Maybe even photos of towers installed on Speedsters the same as mine?
I'm sort of leaning towards the Monster Tower MTe

I have seen a few 98's with towers. Not sure which brand though. Let me know what you come across. I would like to check them out.

If you do get one ... post back some pics and how the install went. I'd be interested in one aswell.

Not on a Speedster, but I can give you some background on installing an aftermarket waketower.

Go here to see my writeup on the process:

Here's what the result looks like:

Looks Good! Good Write up too!

Thats a great article and looks great!

I didn't really think much of the towers till I was wakeboarding off a friends tower. I found a big difference! I'm just not dropping $35Gs on a new boat with one; all said and done how much did it cost you?

Under a kilobuck delivered to my door from Joystick. If you do the big backer plates like I did the marine plywood and fiber-reinforced epoxy will add a bit more. I would recommend a new set of drill bits, too, for protection of your fiberglass.

All told it was probably $1000-1100, plus my time. WELL worth it.

Report back on what you decide!

Nice tower

I am buying an 01 challenger 2000 and I love the look of the waketower you installed.

No other projects are in the budget this season, but keep us informed about the quality and functionality of the tower.

I can already tell you that the waketower is absolutely great. We installed it in the Fall of 2008, had an entire season on it in 2009, and have already started wakeboarding on it this year. It is solid as a rock, looks great, works great, and we get lots of compliments on it. Its design and color look like it came on the boat from the factory. I strongly, strongly recommend it.

Whats the hull thickness on a challenger 180? Do you need to strengthen the hull at all for a wake tower?

I wonder if this tower will fit the 1800 challengers? Does anybody know?

If you're asking about the Joystick tower, yes - it will fit. I believe the 1800 is slightly narrower than the 2000, and the tower is designed to accomodate various widths.

If you look closely at the top crossmember, it slides over the side supports. You position things so the width fits your boat, then you drill holes and run bolts through both pipes to fix that width. There's quite a bit of range in that, and when I talked to them they said they have several versions of varying dimensions specifically to accommodate different boat sizes, shapes, and mounting options.

They seemed very familiar with a wide range of brands and models when I spoke to them pre-sales. I recommend you do the same, tell them what you have, and see what they suggest.
