VTS rod relocation

I was out looking at my XP a few minutes ago while unloading groceries on Ice Planet Hoth, er I mean my garage, and got to thinking (Yea, I know, that's bad), If i were to relocate the VTS rod from where it connects on the nozzle, could I get more travel out of it? It looks like I could move it down a bit and squeak out a couple of degrees of travel, but I'm wondering if that will put more stress on the VTS motor. I adjusted my SPX just a few turns of the adjuster to put the nose down just a bit, and it was much better behaved on choppy water.

Anybody ever tried moving the rod, and what was your result?
 
Ive never adjusted the rod on mine, but I did notice a huge decrease in top in mph when it is angled down too much. My VTS system was disconnected when I bought ski so I guess its dead. Didnt want to risk blowing MPEM for any reason. Motor and assembly is clean, and motor works. I touch motor wires to battery to drive it up and down while on trailer for fine adjustment. I have it set about 1 degree down from straight out the back of the ski for best results.

Rob, just a reminder that the hx manual adjustment probably fits, runs only about $40-50 shipped it allows you to manually crank it down/up a notch or two manually in seconds. I had that put on my 96 xp, removed the vts and plugged the hole, to be honest I just set it a hair down like you did and never really messed with it much after.
 
Yep, Ive seen a post about a little knob assembly for converting to manual adjustment. I would like to just remove the vts assembly in the back of ski and plug hole without the HX kit. But I am guessing it is needed to keep the rod from flopping all around. What did you plug VTS hole in hull with?
Maybe the hx kit comes with a plug?

I've also thought about drilling a hole closer to the nozzle so it would have more 'throw' up/down... never got around to it though.
 
How do you adjust the rod? Do you just unscrew to lengthen and tighten to shorten it up?

Yea, that's what I was trying to explain. lol

When I got mine, the VTS motor had been replaced and it just seemed to tilt the nozzle a lot higher (to make the front go up) than my XP. I thought that the previous owner might just guesstimated where to adjust it when he put it back together.
 
I set mine to flat (0 degrees) when the gauge is centered.

Yes, you can thread in/out to get it right.

You could also weld on a new arm that places the rod closer to the pivot point, which would give you more throw.

I wanted to do this to enable even more nose popping trim levels and nose diving fun.

I just sold my beater skis, and thus won't be making this mod to my primary skis... But you have at it! Lol

i just used a standard bilge plug from ace hardware, $7... top left of picture

ya, that's a first where I've heard pic's coming in upside down on a browser.... but the bottom line, a bilge plug fills the hole just fine, I had mine that way for at least a year with no issues. I was just suggesting the HX manual setup as an alternative to manually manipulating it with wires on a battery.
 
I would assume that's the problem. On my pc and on my phone (android) the pic shows up fine. I'm sure Reynolds was on his phone too, an iPhone as well.

Actually, I have used 3 of my skis wih a broken vts shaft,(98,96,95xp's) with no real side affects.maybe a bit off top speed,but not much really
