I agree, personally I like to check the condition of the pump, seals, impeller, etc. And it really doesn't take that long to change a wear ring anyway.

I just watched the video, it's a 4-tek which uses a teflon wear ring. I still would be worth a try, seems no matter how careful I always nick the pump when I cut the old wear ring out. However I would still remove the impeller and check out the pump.
I do it all the time, mostly on the 4tecs, the wear ring isn't very tight and will pull/twist right out with a pair of vice grips(some of the 4tecs have screws you have to remove first). you don't even need to put it in the freezer.
