So checking things over before this weekend I noticed my longer bolt solution has failed. Guess jumping wakes this weekend ripped out the remaining threads. So gonna overnight a helicoil kit and get this fixed for good. Pitch is 1.25 right? What other information do I need to get the right size?

This the right one?25981946_hel_hel55468_pri_larg.jpg

Just realized that's super small it's M8x1.25

Also are the holes in the cover the same depth? Meaning in the same carb top and bottom go the same depth

M8 X1.25 You can fit a 16mm long coil in there. The holes are all less than 22mm. Remember to snap the tang off after you install it. Don't F-up, it's a beotch you un-coil a heli-coil, especially an 8mm.

The lower PTO will bottom out before you go thru the RV cover. I would use a piece of tape to mark your depth on the drill bit so you don't over drill, you will have 15mm of breathing room from the depth of the pocket to the face of the RV cover.

Also, use the exact size drill bit. It looks like that kit comes with the insertion tool and the tap----NO DRILL BIT.

21/64 appears to be the drill bit recommended. I've already marked the depth by sticking a dowel in there and plan to tape it. I did a test fit with my 90* drill and it fits great. I threaded the other bolt in the other hole to use as a guide. The exhaust is in the perfect spot to use as a rest to get it as straight as I could by pulling it off.

So last question coarse or fine?

I'll swing by carquest on my way in to work in the morning and pick that up. Already taped off the carb hole and stuff a paper towel in there first. Made enough dumb mistakes to this point. Dropped a freaking washer down the carb throat today. Fortunately laid to rest RIGHT before the engine ingested it. Ugh! I'm not fit to be working on these things apparently. Never had these kinds of bad luck with any car or truck before. It's like a perfect storm every time I touch this thing. LOL!

At this point I just have to laugh.

That's what I thought. Wild they're calling it coarse thread.

It actually is coarse thread, kinda. You can thread a 5/16-18 screw into an M8X1.25 tapped hole, but not the other way IIRC. 18 threads per inch----is considered coarse in my eyes compared to 5/16-24

As long as I end up with the same result I'm happy. :)

You're right yet again, Dan. Had I just listened to you lkke 3 years ago and helicoiled it then I'd be good by now. Hah!

Target acquired!! How have I never been to a carquest before? Those people, at least the one I was at, actually knew what they were talking about. All my local walpart stores if I called and said "hey I need an m8x1.25 helicoil kit" they'd be like what.....what is that? We don't sell that here. lol

what was even better is he said hey do you need the drill bit too? I said YUP didn't figure you'd sell those here, yup sure do, you need 21/64 it's right here. WOW! It's like you actually know what you sell and how to do your job....no way!

So glad that's over! Wish I would have done it a long time ago. It was fairly easy, but very nerve racking. I hope I never have to helicoil anything again. I'm also really glad I did it in the ski. It provided me the ability to rest my arms on the side and exhaust to get as straight as possible.

Also when the bit grabbed on and ripped the drill out of my hands it likely would have pitched the RV cover across the room and off whatever work bench I was working on. It completely destroyed my 90* drill bit thing that I've drilled all kinds of metal with. So had to go buy a new one.

Freshly tapped

Helicoil in. When I was threading this in for some reason it just wouldn't go in "straight". But once it got in the hole and completely seated it was fine.So not sure what the deal was with that.

So awesome to be able to use the stock allen head bolt!!! Much better than my ghetto hex bolt

Since I'm an idiot and to this point everything has gone.....relatively smooth I plugged the carb holes JUST so I didn't drop anything in them. Even though the butterfly's are technically closed. I managed to drop enough things down those holes, but fortunately able to fish out.

All done! Now let's ride!!!!!

Now that is done and it wasn't ALL that bad......I still hope I never have to helicoil anything again. Like never....ever....ever. Did I say never. Just so nerve racking.

Also for those that have never done this. If you watch youtube vids you'll see people blast out the holes with compressed air and blast around their motor with air. Now I'm fairly risk averse. So I took my shop vac and put a little hose on the end of the vac and sealed that with some duct tape and sucked all around the motor, the hull, and the hole. After that was done I did blast the hole with a touch of compressed air with the vac hose right by the hole to catch everything. Even though I had the hole taped AND a paper towel stuff in the hole under that.

When tapping the hole I also sprayed the tap with WD40. This provided some lube but also kept the shavings stuck to the tap so when I pulled it out they came out with it. Then sucked the hole clear again. Put in the helicoil with some red loctite, broke the tang, and sucked that clear again. Although I don't think I was able to get it out. No biggie if it stays in.

Rode it good and hard today. After 3 years seems all the kinks are worked out and it just runs amazing. Went to mpower's today and ripped around lake gaston. Apparently rode it so hard the seat post came apart. That's kinda scary as my seat could have just flown off on the 2 hour drive home at 70mph!!! Didn't even notice it until I got home and was cleaning it up.
