Upgrading to umi steering for 2000 seadoo lrv

the link didn't work.

and I MUST ask,, since i've been on an LRV once... why would you want UMI on that particular model ?

IMO you would see absolutely no added benefit except for possibly aesthetics, and you'd lose the tilt option.

I can understand UMI on a performance machine, XP, SPX, GSX, even RX maybe, but LRV makes no sense to me unless for some odd reason your steering is broken to the point where a stock replacement won't work and you need to replace everything.

Yea, I wouldn't really bother messing with much on a working 15 year old ski... is the steering broken? You're really not going to add much for your $ here...

The reason is because I am completely modifying the ski. New engine, pump, I'm planning over 500 hp, so it is going to be really aggressive. Otherwise I completely agree with you guys. But when it's said and done in want to be able to pull push at the handle bars hard and aggressively without any concern. Also I believe the 2000 lrv which I have doesn't have the tilting option. I think 2002 and 2003 had it.

Basically mechanically everything will be new and custom except for the steering assembly so I might as well make that new and since I'm trying to make it durable I heard umi steering is the way to go. What do you guys think?

I'm really interested in this build. One question what are you going to put in there to get 500hp?

Lou

It's going to be an all aluminum small block chevy, when I get close to finishing and or finish I will post pictures and a step by step process of what it took to make happen. Although it's really major so it's going to be hard to still call it an lrv once I'm done with it. Regardless any help to get umi steering for this lrv would be greatly appreciated as well lol.

If you look at this picture it's of a 2000 seadoo gti. According to the eBay link it says this steering system is compatible with that ski. To me the steering assembly and everything up to the cable is the same. If that's true this should work for me. I'm getting a custom cable anyway. Is there anyone that can confirm my assumption before I go out and buy this system? Appreciate the help in advance.

whoooaaaa nelly. Okay, just curious. Are you going to even be able to transfer all of those 500 ponies to the water, can this/any hull even handle that?

You should just make a new "Build thread" so we can watch as you go, not all at once. There are many people here building custom skis, such as Seadoodoc who seem to be genius in building such creations who can definitely help you out.

And even if the hull is big enough and strong enough to handle the 500hp V8 you would need something like a Berkley jet pump to handle the hp, personally this sounds more like a project for a jet boat. I just don't see how you would be able to sandwich all that into a LRV hull.

Lou

wow, interesting build.

I have limited (no pun inteended) experience with the LRV, from what I recall there's no more room in the hull w/o modifications than there is in a GTX.

I'd love to see how this will fit, i'm sure your going to need some sort of 4 stroke pump, tunnel reinforcement, etc..I love conversion ski's. sounds fascinating !

officially subscribed...:)

Subscribed also! This should be good project to watch unfold.
I rode a LRV once, I can't imagine a 500 hp one. Interesting...

I appreciate all the positive input guys! Always nice to see someone besides yourself excited about your project lol. Does anyone still not yet know the answer to whether the above system will work for me?

It would work only if you use a stock pump, as stated before a stock pump will be a bottleneck with that much power. Have you given any thought about what jet pump you would use? I suspect you would need a much heavier duty steering system for what you are proposing.

Lou

So hooking up to the pump I want to use which btw is a Scott 852, won't be a problem I also intend to run a larger stronger cable, I am only concerned about the steering system actually mounting onto the ski nicely. After that I will need to fabricate the system a little to accept the larger cable. That is why I am going with this umi system in the first place for a more durable heavy duty system. The way I see it my weak point would now be the bearing which if it ever wears out I can replace.

I'm backing out of this thread. As a member of the USCG Auxiliary I am pledged to promote safe boating, this thing sounds like a far cry from safe boating, so I will just keep my opinions to myself. Good luck with your project.

Lou

This seems crazy, interesting but crazy. The lrv is the size of one of the mid 90's Seadoo boats. I could see someone "hotrodding" one of those but an lrv? With a small block Chevy? If you do this, document the progress? I guess lol
I'm all for creative builds so I'm interested to see if this can be done, even if I don't understand the reasoning

96 XP800!
Keep the 2 strokes alive!

Love this! Way to think outside the box! My Dad has been insisting to stuff a v8 in something. Youtube had a guy with V6 in GSX . The sound alone would be worth the project. 500hp is not that crazy in a 900lb ski. WFinals had 18 pro GP boats lined up all making over 450 hp. Go getem tiger!
