I was picking up some parts this morning at the local dealer got to talking about key programming. Along the way, the tech said they used a "universal key" in the shop so they don't have to use the customer keys. Anyone heard of this? Maybe I'm think too far ahead, but be happy with one of these.

I've never heard of an all around universal key. If I'm not mistaken, they can program that specific key to anything that rolls through the door; if that is what is he meant.

Maybe "Dealers" only has this key. It would save time for them.
Although no one on the forum has ever mentioned this before and we do have techs that posts.
Maybe this is a secret.

Any decent shop has one, it's called Buds or CandooPro in the event the customers key isn't with the watercraft they just add one of the "shop keys" that hang on the wall to the machine and go on about their business. No need to delay the tech or call and bother a customer over a missing key.

There is no such thing as an actual "universal key" in the form of a DESS lanyard, every key has a unique code stored in it and it takes about 30 seconds to add one to any Sea Doo with modern technology. This is what a screenshot of an MPEM with four key codes assigned to it looks like using Buds with a Megatech license or a CandooPro shop module, this came in my shop yesterday without a key and number 4 is one of my service keys that's been added.

The 96 gts does not have DESS that I'm aware of, so there is a universal key

96 XP800!
Keep the 2 strokes alive!

Maybe the what he called a universal key I is just one the shop keeps programmed to all the customers skis as they come into the shop and maybe they also add it to every one the sell that would make more sense. Can't blame a guy for hoping.

Adam - yep my 96 GTS just has a basic switch. My GTI has the DESS post. I want a second key, I'm just too cheap. :)
