Trying to Put a 97 Info Gauge in a 96

I have a 96GSX that I'm getting going again and the info gauge was roached. Not just the screen but the lens and all. So I had a nice one from a 97GSX and I matched up all the wiring I would need by function and color before I made the first snip.

Now I am missing some functions and was wondering if you guys could help me figure out what I'm missing. The VTS works perfect and reads correctly in the gauge. As soon as I power the gauge up though it reads:

low oil, low fuel, low batt, maint(when I ground the black w yellow striped wire)

They only send one wire to the gauge for each of these functions. Both pinks for the fuel, both blues for the oil, etc went into the 97 MPEM first. I don't know what properties the 97 MPEM were providing and what I need to try and duplicate.

Please let me know if you see what I'm missing or have any ideas to try.

Look at both year's wiring diagrams.

For that info center to work you give it one wire from the fuel and one from the oil sensor and the other wires go to a ground that you make.
You have to give it that gound because the 97 mpem does it inside the box.
This is the issue for low fuel and low oil warnings.
Low bat just means low bat since its below 12.5v. That will change when your running though.
"Maint warning" you can get rid of by holding down both set and mode buttons for 10 seconds. It comes on after 150 or so hours and doesn't mean anything.
Only the later models with RFI or DI have a data connection. This info center is just a dumb instrument that only reports what it see's from the sensors.
Missing functions like speed, temp, compas, means you missed one ground wire that enables the speed, temp, and compas features.

The 97 mpem is just a junction box and the 96 gtx/gsx is a look at what is inside the box.
Look at the gtx and gsx wiring diagrams in the 96 supplement.

Ground the BLK/RED to enable the other sensors. Its called speed sensor reference in the 96 gsx diagram but its shown as connected to ground on the GTX.

Thanks Mechanix! I will poke around with a jumper and this information and see if I can get things to wake up. I got my signs in from your parts ad and love them.

Thanks Jammin. I've been looking at the Seadoosource stuff and that usually gets me through. I needed to go deeper on this one though. I did look up the 97 schematic but have not bounced it off the 96 as far as Stephen has.

I'll report back with my successes or failures after I get a chance to dive back in.

Cool, I'm glad you liked them :)

The 96 supplement really does show you everything you need to know. Its what I used to do the oposit of what your doing by adding a 96 GTX info center to a 2000 GS.

my 99 gsx rfi only came with a info center but added a analog speedo from a gsx limited and used the seadoo source schematics and lots of pics to get the job done. works great at first try! good luck on your project as i'm sure you will get it figured out.

I took another look and still cannot move forward. With the Bk/red grounded it just adds Maint to the list of problems. I grounded all the blacks and still get only the vts part of the gauge working.

Matt I think your issue is the blue/blk and the pink/blk from the fuel and oil tank senders need to get grounded into the ebox.

I wish it were true but they are there. I followed them right in the grey box and they have loops that were on the ground posts from the factory. Thanks for the thought though.

This is the GTX wiring diagram that shows the info center wiring.
Should be able to short the fuel and oil wires to ground and get rid of the fuel and oil warning.

The maint warning you have to clear if its like the 96 gsx gauge. It won't go away. But it does get in the way at first. Get it turned back on and hold the mode and set buttons for 10 seconds. It should cause that warning to go dormant again. After that all the selections should be available.

Just trying to bring the two diagrams side by side for easyer comparison

Wait a minute, What is that black/yellow maint wire for ? Maybe its what is keeping the maint warning lit... Its not on the 96 info center. I wonder if this gets a ground or something else ??

Oh...duh...you are using a 96 GSX box.

I really dont see how you didnt get it working. all those wires at the bottom of the gauge are for the speedo, air temp, and compass. The only extra wire is for that maint light. Weird.

Got a 97 gsx harness geared up Nick ? Connector #1 pin 13.
Would be good to know if it gets power or ground or maybe a 5v logic signal from the mpem... Maybe the Maint warning is getting in the way of other functions being available...

As far as I know the light just comes on at intervals to make a guy take it to the dealer (until the turn off sequence was posted) LCD gauges have their own hour meter and I can only assume the gauge is telling the light to come on.

Im curious now...I will put together a bench test.

I think you are onto something...I hooked it up w/o a gauge, put my meter on battery ground and touched the pin and got nothing when I lit the MPEM up. So I then plugged in a gauge and stuck my probe down into that pin thru the connector (not into the wire) and when I lit up the mpem that time I get 8.51-8.52-8.51 volts in time with the light flashing. at rest my tester battery is about 11.50 volts.

Well I probed around until the info gauge refused to power up anymore(oops). I had a couple orange lettered 3" gauges so I stuck a VTS on the left and a tach on the right. It's over now but thanks guys.

Only thing that sucks is that I wrestled that tank and fixed the baffle so it reads. I'd drill a 2" hole and pop a fuel gauge in there somewhere if it were mine but the buyer may consider that damage.
