I've got a 98 sportster 1800 and I would like to know if there are any tips for aligning my new sbt engine without using the alignment tool. $75.00 to rent a tool seems a bit overkill to me so I'm hoping there's an easier way to achieve the same results.

Thanks

Do it.
A misaligned drive shaft will cause a lot of problems.
Stripped PTO's, ruined carbon seal, LEAKS, and so on..........

But why waste new install to do it again if it goes bad for 75 bucks.........

Put a ad in the regional section and you may find someone who has bought one will let you use it.
Otherwise buy one and re sell it, craigslist if your lucky, or call independent shop and ask if you can rent out theirs.
Shipping box is $$ b/c weight and dimensions of box

Theres a thread with the inside diameter needed to make your own.
You have to machine the end of aluminum so it slides into PTO.

Just buy the tool, it's a quality tool and well worth the money. Keep it for the next time. I work at an auto dealership and we pay a lot more than that for Kent-Moore tools of lesser quality.

+10 on the tool, wouldn't do it with out it. I just re-powerd a guys 99 Challenger and you wouldn't believe how far out of alignment they were from the factory, just disgusting.

Here's his Carbon seals, the sealing surface should not be stepped to one side (first pic, right side of carbon seal) and the inner bore shouldn't touch the drive shaft either (second pic, lines in the bore). Some guys will say it's over rated to align your engine, proof is in the pics!

dude for christs sake you live in FL, find someone who is willing to let you rent or borrow the tool...
there is no cutting corners when it comes to installing a new engine and having expectations!!!

or invest in the largest Bilge pump you squeeze in there bc your going to need it, and insurance to!

Would you believe there isn't a single Seadoo authorized dealer/service anywhere near me that will touch a jetboat. not even a brand new one.

Buy the tool, and then sell it for $100 here.

The "$50" it will cost you to use it, will save more $$$ than that, if you rip up a PTO, Pump, Impeller... or God forbid... bend/throw a drive shaft. (That can break the hull)

I own so many things that i've used once.... its embarrassing.

Isn't $75 about the cost of a days worth of fuel on the boat ?

post an Ad on Craigslist locally, you'll probably get a phone call or 3.

or just buy it, (order 2, and you can play swords with your friends)

I bought one and haven't regretted it. I own a lot of seadoos though, and don't ever plan on switching. Good thing is the tool works on the larger 155mm pumps as well.
