Time to fix electrical gremlin 96 xp 800.

So it's time I start digging into my electrical gremlin I've created on my 96 xp 800. Towards the tail end of last riding season things went nuts with my multi-gauge. Every warning light was illuminated, which caused the beeper to go off constantly. Ran into the issue at one point where the gauges wouldn't turn off. That only happened that one time.

Now my multi gauge will barely even power up and is VERY dim. The fuel gauge part is now barely readable too.....So I'm leaning heavily to the gauge needing to be replaced.

Now I'm certain that won't fix my problem. That's just collateral damage that gauge punked out.....I'm guessing. I need to get up with 1983 and see if he has spare mpems to test with. What else could it be? Ski rides phenomenal! Now if I didnt care about wanting the fuel gauge or warning lights I could just unplug the gauge and ride on. Also once the gauge is unplugged the alram turns off, naturally. I want those warning lights to work and be reliable. I don't want to burn up a motor.

I'm thinking it's your gauge, I had a similar problem with my 96GTI. I suspect you have an internal short in the gauge itself. I bought a good used one from Nick Minnetonka4me, problem solved. You could also check the wiring to the gauge but I betcha it's the gauge. I doubt it's the MPEM.

That was going to be my first course of action regardless since the gauge appears to be done. Would be amazing if that actually worked. For me it's never that easy, but it'd be great. Good to hear someone else has run into similar issues though.

Depending on the part number matching, I have a couple of 2" info gauges in my closet, I've had them for sale for $50 for some time and no takers.

If you want, I can mail you one for $5 & you can test it, if it doesn't solve the problem, send it back.

If the gauge solves the problem pay $35 more and keep it.

I could have sent a mpem, but I actually just sold it over the weekend.

Let us know if it fixes the issue, I think you are on the right track....its either that, the wiring or the mpem.

Why not hit up 1983?

Last time I talked to him he didn't have any multi gauges. He said he had some mpems though. So either way I'd need to source a gauge somewhere else. I do plan to get up with him about an mpem next.

I just figured was close, can't go wrong with the Spimster

suke I'm assuming you have the analog trim gauge next to the multigauge? the one with the needle? is that working fine?

Yup. vts gauge works perfectly fine. No issues with that.

So new gauge appears to have "fixed" the issue. I didn't start it as it's late. Didn't want to wake up my boy.....or my neighbors kids. HAH!
Old gauge. Sucks cause look how nice that looks. You can see all the other lights dimly lit too. I'm sure once I started it my beeper would have gone off non-stop like before. Also you can't even see the fuel level anymore. I could JUST barely see it in person as it was so faint.

New gauge. Spim I'll send ya the remaining $35 :)

That'll just blow my mind if that works.

Money sent! Now I need to put it fully in and start it. See if that truly fixes it, or if I need to keep digging.

This has always bothered me. Looks like someone put a crap connector with some electrical tape. Where does that wire go, is it replaceable, if not can I join some wire there to make it longer with a better connector? If so what gauge?

If it's the rear Coil box I'd be using heat shrink tubing and securing it to the negative battery cable.... I've destroyed at least one CDI by having that cable loose!

Yup that's what it is. I've never left it unconnected on the negative terminal, just want to clean it up and put a better connector on there. This one looks like it has seen better days.
