Hi All,

Well... I never thought I would say this... but I think I'm going to sell my little sportster this spring.

The wife is ready to give birth to our second kid, and as we were talking about things/life yesterday... we came to the conclusion that we probably won't want to put an infant in that little boat. Because of that... it probably won't get used much this summer, and I would hate for it to just sit. The wife would still like to go to the lake this summer... but she just wants to sit on the shore, and read a book... so that means I will probably get more use out of my jetskis this summer.

OK... this isn't a totally sad day, because the wife wants an Islandia !!!!!!!!!!!! She likes the idea of having a boat big enough, that we can go out, and she can sit on... eat lunch... swim from... and it has a kiddy pool that the new baby can splash in.

Right now... the plan is to sell the Sportster in the spring, when boat prices are at their highest... and find an islandia next fall/winter. (when prices are down) Then, next summer... when the kid will be one year old... we can go boating again.

Anyway... you guys are like family... let me know what you think.

It would be the more logical way to go, but to be honest we went out (me, my wife, our 2yr. old son and 14 month old girl) in our sportster and it was just fine. In fact, both kids would get great naps while boating around!! You will eventually go to a bigger boat (I did) and you will love it so like you said...sell it when prices are the best.

Sounds like a good logical plan to me. I only got to take my boat out like 5 times last year due to having a new baby so I can totally identify with you. She just turned 1 in November and I am planning on taking her out on it this year.

Thanks for the input guys. I'm glad I didn't get a... "Are you crazy?" or... "why are you turning to the dark side?"

Foster... you still managed to go out 5 times. I don't even know If I will do that. In the toy box (garage) I have 3 jetski's... a couple street bikes (have to go riding with my dad)... a SuMo bike to run track day's... a RZR 800 to go off roading with... and an entire squadron of RC aircraft.

So... if the wife wants to go to the water... and I'm not playing with any of my other toys... I will probably take a ski out. And... if I go to the water by myself... I'll take a ski. That's why I figure the boat is on the short list.

Thor.... I agree with you, but the wife doesn't want to take the chance with a newborn. (she is worried about sun exposure too)

Sounds familiar....that's why I got rid of my Sportster.....with full intentions of upgrading once my kids were old enough to go out as well.....I ended up taking about 4 summers off, but am back this year !

Good luck with the sale, womeone will be getting a nice boat for sure.

I got lucky..lol My wife was very understanding and 3 of the times was just me and the guys. The other 2 times my mother in law watched the baby. I am hoping to actually go out a lot more this year. I am sure we will outgrow this boat too and I will be like you looking for one bigger.

I am lucky. Both of my kids are old enough for our Speedster. They love it. We were actually just talking about it last night. Apparently, my Son is driving while my daughter is working the stereo. lol.

That sounds like a smart, well thought out plan. It definitely seems to be the best way to go for you. I know you'll miss the sportster... but new toys are always fun!

The Islandia looks like an awesome family boat. Plenty of stuff to do. What year would you be looking into? I assume you'll stick with 2 stroke?

My buddy just bought a 97 XP from Craig's List (only $900 and in great shape!), so we will be riding skis a lot this summer... we'll have to meet up for some river trips to get you out of the house lol. I bet djredman would meet up again too... we could get a Pittsburgh SeaDooForum riding group established :D

And if you ever have withdrawl from driving a SeaDoo boat, just call me and you can take mine for a spin!

i'm totaly with ya buddy, theres always a time to let go and move on. i am actually doing the same thing right now. my speedsters in the classifieds as we chat! trying to get a 28' deck boat with lots of storage. do not like the idea of trading a jet for a spinner but have to do it. good luck to you and congradulations on the new baby

A Pittsburgh chapter would be cool. I'm sure we can pull that together this summer. I still plan on riding, so we can all hook up. AND... I will take you up on the ride in your 1800. Even though we want an Islandia... an 1800 would work too.

As far as the 2-stroke thing... yes, I would like a 2-stroke... but the Islandia only came with a Merc engine... or the newer Rotax 4-tech engines. I think my target would be either an '06 or '07. That would have a pair of 4-tech engines, but no superchargers.

I'd like to see some pics of the XP. I saw it... and I almost called on it, but never did.

My final thought on the boat is... I have that big Genesis, and it has the same capacity as the Sportster. (4 passengers @ 680 #'s)

Thanks for all the input guys.

I should have the 1800 and waverunner out a lot this summer (assuming another engine doesnt go on me) so definitely lots of chances to meet up for riding. I should be moving into an apartment in South Park within the next few months, so I will be a lot closer to work... and the Pittsburgh pool :D

Thats a good point about the Genesis... it could take the whole family for a spin without any problem, so you should be fine for a summer or two without a boat

I'd be interested to see the islandia with the 4tec's. I actually never saw a 4tec engine in person, so i'd be interested to hear the sound difference between that and a 2stroke. I would LOVE to get an RXP eventually as my second ski... but the price tag is out of my range right now

I attached some pics of the XP my buddy got. No trailer, but for $900 i think he got a good deal. There's a 98 GTX Limited (951) with a blown engine (submersion) that he might check out this weekend... he talked the guy down to 600 bucks. Sounds like a good deal, since a new SBT engine would be around 1000-1200... as long as nothing else was damaged There's also a guy with a brand new double trailer and a 95 XP 787 for 1200 bucks... but the trailer has no title or registration

Sad to hear that lol, you have helped me so much with my sportster! Well Im glad your stepping up and I know you would still help all of us! Come to think of it, Dr. Honda, you deserve a Islandia! (im looking at pictures, thats a huge boat!!)..

:)

DSW... if it's in your garage... you could borrow his engien for your boat. :p He wouldn't even know it was gone.

For $900... that's a good deal.

Cheappc... I'm not going anywhere. I'll still be a seadoo guy.

Actually... it may all work out. My neighbor may want to buy the boat, and that would mean that it will go to the lake along with me most of the time. And I could borrow it every once in a while.

Congratulations on the second child!

Sounds to me like you have a well thought out plan, AND you have your priorities in order. Good luck!

I'll throw my thoughts in here too...

I can say from experience, when the second child arrives, much more free time is lost. Even more so then when the first came along. With the ages of your kids, now you will have two young ones needing your attention and it gets much harder (but very much worth it), especially when you are the watching them both by yourself. My wife often worked nights/weekends and even finding time to do something like cut the grass was difficult.

To be practical and get the most economical gain, you are approaching this the right way. Sell high, buy low. You can manage the summer without a boat, especially when you have PWCs to get you through. Hopefully you find plenty of time to use them.
