So took the doo out to do plug reading. It has been running overall rich when looking at my plugs after each ride. Warmed the engine up and put new set of plugs in after warm. Ran it for 4 min at 3/4 throttle and cut the engine. Was shocked to see zero carbon or color change to insulator. Tried on 1/4 throttle and same thing. On my way back to the dock I was going about 1/2 throttle and the engine stalled. UH-OH... Sinking feeling.... Pulled the plugs and no metal on the electrode and still looked lean. Let it cool down a bit and started up. Rode back to the dock and pulled the plugs again. Now they looked rich. Only thing I can think of is my oil pump is flaking out. Tested compression and 148 on mag and 150 on pto. I am sooo nervous now I am going to go premix. 40:1 correct for a 1995 657X? Also, I am thinking about just putting a shut off valve on the oil line vs pulling the pump and installing a block off kit. Assuming no issues with doing it like this? I have another issue but going to post a seperate thread!!!

I'd ride it more than just short bits. Put some hours on it before you start jumping here and there. You have to remove the oil pump, it need lube to keep it..lubed. Run a few tanks thru it. I never had success running a plug chop on brand new plugs. My 96 runs nice after a nice long burn run, but idle back to the dock and they plugs are wet-ish.

If the 657X is like the 717 it's not quite as easy to switch to premix as the 787.

Either way you can't just stop the oil flow to the pump, it has to be done properly

96 XP800!
Keep the 2 strokes alive!

Started premix today.... Now I need to decide if I want to tear the carb down and increase the jet sizes to compensate for the volume of oil now displacing the volume of fuel it had when running with the pump... I have done sooo much to this darn thing, I am half tempted just to let it ride and when the day comes that it stops working, sell it for parts!!!!

My wife said if I got rid of the seadoo, that would open up a spot in the garage for the Harley I want to buy! Too many toys and not enough room....

1. Move to a house with a bigger garage, buy Harley, show the wife there is more than one way to skin a cat. I like to have my cake and eat it too.

You sound like my wife now! She has been trying to get me to downsize our house and find a smaller home with a 3 car garage. I am not sure I want to stay in Ohio for the rest of my life and I really only want to do one more move in my lifetime if I can help it! I have one going off to college after next year and the other going into high school. I am tied to Ohio for at least another 4 years...

I gotta ask, i see the term "plug chop" frequently, what does that mean?

After getting engine warm, replace with new plugs and run at 1/4 throttle for a few min and pull the lanyard. Remove the plugs and read them. Install another new set and do the same thing at 3/4 to full throttle. Lets you see how rich or lean the low speed and high speed circuits are. Some actually "chop" the plug open to fully see the insulator.

I am leaving the pump on the ski. I have the oil line pinched off right now but have a 1/4" shut off valve arriving today. Can anyone offer any reason why this would not be a good idea? The way I figure it is the worst that can happen is the pump seizes and either just stops the ability to produce any pressure or locks up and strips the plastic gear. There is no way any plastic part of the gear can make it into the engine if that happens. Just don't see I need to tear that side of the motor down to remove the pump.
