Supercharger Rebuild Questions Concerns

Okay I’ve had my 06 GTX-SC for a year and I’m at 85 hours. After reading all the posts I’m ready to do my rebuild before I have any washer issues.

My questions what is the latest kit number for the 185hp rebuild?

Should I also be buying Riva or other washers and not using the ones that come in the kit?

Do I skip using the standard seal and use the Viton Supercharger Oil Seal?

Last what tools will I absolutely need to buy to complete the rebuild and where is the best place to purchase? I have a ton of tools and don’t mind making something’s as a work around if it can be easily done?

Since it runs great right now and still gets the full speed and RPM’s I was also trying to figure out if I would be better off just changing the washers out but I’m thinking it’s best to do the rebuild and get the updated shaft and other parts. What are the community thoughts on this?

You may want to PM "Chester". He is a Pro wrench, and works at a dealer... so he would know the newest part number.

Don't ask him all the questions in your PM... just direct him to this thread. That way we will all know.

The Riva washer are good but I prefer the R&D washer because they are bronze and will not damage anything as they wear. You can just replace the washers but you're better off upgrading to the newer shaft kit. You will need several new tools to do this yourself, they are all listed in the manual. You can just use the seal supplied in the kit.

Chester, I have that tool set and I can tell you that the spanner wrench is pretty flimsy and bends easily. When trying to remove the nut off the end of the supercharger, the spanner tool flexed and came off the shaft... it just doesn't have good holding power. All I've used is the spanner and the supercharger mounting tool to change out my washers (I'm at 70 hrs), but I was pretty disappointed with that spanner... I wouldn't recommend it. There are much stronger supercharger tools listed on Ebay I wish I'd purchased instead now:

This set may not include all the tools needed to rebuild a supercharger, but the spanner tool looks alot beefier IMHO! I managed to get by with that weak spanner tool from the other set, but it was a PITA.

Regards!

Thank you for pointing that out. I wasn't thinking as I ran into the same problem as you did so I had my machinist make one up like the one you pictured. The Riva one looks like it's beefy enough to work also.

Gears?...

Make sure you count the teeth on your gear. There are two rebuilds and easy to confuse. You'll see a 16 tooth and 17 tooth gear on chargers from 2003 to 06.

FYI, the RIVA wrench works great and will last a long time....worth every penny. I broke the factory wrench the first time I used it.

Does anyone know how critical it is to have the pusher tool to do the rebuild or can I improvise and say use the right size socket as my pusher?

Also does anyone know the latest kit number for the 185hp rebuild? Maybe also the best place to find a good price on it?

I have the charger out now so I just need to find the right kit. I see them around but the numbers are all different and you can’t tell what the latest model is.

just a side question how do you know when the supercharger is gone will it still run is there noises it makes whats the best way to test for this soory if i am not in the right place as i am new to site just wanted to go a litter deeper with the questioning.

You really do NOT want to wait till the SC is gone... that's a worst case scenario! If the SC fails, you may hear noises as it comes apart inside and you will DEFINITELY notice the engine loosing power. If failed SC parts fall down into the engine they may block the oil pickup screens and cause further engine failures. Again, you really do not want to wait for the SC to actually fail! Service your SC at 100 hr intervals, if you have ceramic SC washers replace them with the metal upgrades like NOW (and this does not change the 100 hr service interval for the SC).

Chester, where is the ceramic washers on 2005 rxt supercharge,. I just got the unit out, remove all torq bolts and 17 mm nut on the shaft

I'm not Chester, but the cermic washers *should* be on either side of the gear. You have the 17mm nut on the end of the shaft, some spring washers (note they have a specific orientation to each other!!!!), a cermic washer, the drive gear, another ceramic washer (from my memory... there may be a spacer or two in there somewhere also). The ceramic washers are on either side of the drive gear however! They allow the gear to slip when you suddenly release the throttle.

Keep everything you take off that shaft in the CORRECT order, as they have to go back on just like they came off! Also beware that drive gear, it has tiny roller bearings inside that almost certainly will fall out when you remove it from the shaft!!! Take this thing apart on top of an old white towel or something so you don't loose any of those tiny roller bearings... if you aren't replacing the bearings with a new kit, then EVERY little bearing has to be accounted for and they are amazingly small IMHO!

Michael is right. The slip washers are on either side of the drive gear and it's easiest to just install new needle bearings when you replace the washers.
