I have a 1997 GTX and i can't get it to turn over enough to crank
When ever i push the start button it either doesn't turn over (sounds like it binding up)
or the starter will kick out and spin freely (rare)
First of all i just put a new battery in it two days ago
I had the starter checked by a local repair shop they said it looked fine
I have 140 psi compression on both cylinders
Whenever i take the spark plugs out it turns over great

do i need to have the starter rechecked?
any ideas anyone thanks for any help

I dont think its drag from the new prop/liner. It had a little binding, but it should be able to turn that.

did the starter shop actually open it?

Batteries can be bad...might be worth getting it load tested. also make sure it has enough CCAs...I have seen some people putting in wheelchair batteries and they dont have enough.

Outside of that...its usually a bad ground wire. They rot from the inside.

the starter im not sure about but my dad and my grandpa (worked on cars for a living) both take there stuff to this starter and alternator shop

i put a battery in it from walmart the battery doesnt say how many CCA it is

the last battery i had did it was 270 CCA

it actually turned better with the old battery (the old battery looked smaller)

many cranking amp do you think i should have

im going to carry the battery to get it checked somewhere

what would you do about replaceing the ground (make one homemade?)

If the guy just looked at the starter and didnt open it up...its questionable.

The battery...I like cheap batteries, but the out of box failure rate is higher than others.

Ground...yeah make one yourself, if you have any liquid electrical tape, use it to try to seal the connections after you crimp. 4ga.

I took the battery and got it checked it checked bad

So i took it back and they gave me a new one

What me and my dad are thinking is if its the starter that it wouldn't turn over with or without the plugs in

Keep in mind we are not jet ski mechanics we work on cars

man fail on every front!! If you can turn the pto by hand with the plugs out then its the starter...change out the ground while its out.

Just got the jet ski put together last night
The starter turned out to had a bad gear drive on it
Don't always trust someone when they have said they fixed
It cranked perfect out of the water now im hoping i have no troubles on the water tomorrow
