Starter problems

I have a 2000 Seadoo RX and have replaced the starter twice in a year, the last one lasted about 4 days and then it would not turn. I tore the starter down and what I found was the front bearing (needle bearings) had nothing but dust, no lub. and they where falling out. I bought an after market starter, they are new not rebuilt. This is the first time I have replaced it because it has gotten expensive and I don't have any knowledge of jetskis, my question is since there is no bendix I am assuming the starter is turning when the motor on the jetski is running is this correct. If this is correct then what should be the normal life cycle of a starter. Thanks in advance, Pulpworker

Are you using $50.00 starters from EBay? If you are that's your problem. If you still have your original starter either rebuild it yourself of have it rebuilt. Or buy a used OEM starter and go through it. If not buy a quality starter, I bought one from Overton's last year, Arrow Brand (I think), seems to be O.K.

There is a bendix of sorts, it's not called a bendix but acts line one.

If you buy a factory starter... it will last 10 to 14 years. If you buy an aftermarket starter... it may only last for the first time you push the go button.

Our recommendation here is to just rebuild the factory starter when they start going bad. Normally, a set of brushes, and a cleaning will bring them back to life.


In your RX... there is a counter gear in the engine housing. It has a 1-way bearing in it. Once the engine starts... it over runs, and keeps the starter from spinning with the engine.
