Sportster 1800 Impeller question

OK, I have been driving myself crazy trying to figure this out. Im trying to do research on replacing my impellers to get a little better shot out of the water. I also want to be able to tow a ski'er better. I wouldn't mind a little bit less MPH. Can anyone put me on the fast track to figuring this out? It looks like the 98 sportster 1800 stock impeller is different than EVERYTHING else, even the 99 sportster 1800. Is this correct? Anyone changed impellers on there sportster 1800? if so, what brand, how much, and are you glad you did it? thanks everyone. Does anyone else get like this?

OK... if you want better "out of the hole" and towing power... buy a Skat-Trak swirl, in the pitch they recommend. (you didn't say what year your boat was)

I just looked over on their web site... and they do list the 98 as one pitch... and the 99-00 as a different pitch. I'm not sure why they list the 98 by it self, but the engines, and drive in the 3 years is the same. (720 engines, and 140 pumps) There was probably a change in the hull that made Skat-Track recommend a different impeller.

Anyway... get a swirl and you won't be disappointed.

thanks for the info. i thought it was weird too that they would have the different pitch for the 98. I do have a 98 sportster 1800. should i just call skat trak directly or do you know another place i can get the same thing?

Impros....

I've used Impros for all my impeller mods. The reason is they are fairly new and have grown exponentially in the last few years. They offer a wide range but what's best, this is his (Mike)profession. He will ask you a coupld questions on what it is you want, what you have and then, give you a choice of what's the best change for your money.

Sometimes, people look at their progressive pitch and think if they go up, they'll gain in low end torque and if they go up, they'll gain in top speed. In a way, this might be true. But, being off in one degree either way can change your gain to none at all........

So, find a website that specializes in impellers and ask them. Most of these places also have charts that you can use to compare with what you have and what you want to change to.......:cheers:

Dave is the owner of Impros. He used to work at Skat-Trak. The 98 Sportster 1800 uses a 140mm pump with a 58mm hub and the 99 uses a 140mm pump with a 75mm hub. Hence the difference in impeller recommendations. You can use a large hub impeller on a small hub pump, but not the other way around. Ask Dave at Impros about this. Just by switching to a pair of swirl impellers, you will notice a huge gain in hook-up on acceleration making it much easier to tow with. If you use large hub swirl impellers, it will be even better.
