Hey guys,
I have a 01 XP if. I spin the speedo wheel when the boat is powered but not running the speedo works great. But if I start the machine the speedo will bounce around even if the wheel is not spinning. I woulf guess its a connection issue or ground. But I found it odd its fine when boat is off. Any ideas?
Thanks guys.

Haven't heard of that one.

As you suspect... I would start with a loose connection. Also... I would check the output of the regulator. If it's failing... it could be putting "Noise" into the system. BUT... that's not the normal way it shows up.

Only think that confuses me is it works 100% when the power is on but engine is not running. Regulator noise would attack all electrical though no?

i know on a snowmobile there is a speedo cable and pin that connects to your speedo and to the drivetrain. i am un aware if this is the case for a jetski too, but i had this problem on my sled, and it was a faulty speedo pin. it broke and hense why it was hopping and bouncing all around.

Talk about feeling stupid! I missed the 01 XP in the original post. Wel anyways now you guys know how to fix a snowmobile speedo! :D

seen that before, it is a speed sensor problem, like the wrong one, old style in new style system. check the colors of the wires on each side at the sensor connector, if the wrong speed sensor is used it will do exactly what you describe.

Even if it works fine without the engine running?

yes, that is exactly what it will do. look like it works fine when it's not running and then when you start it, it will jump up and down randomly. the old style speed sensor has different voltage values so it causes it to spike when put in the newer system while running only. what is odd though is that it doesn't jump around constantly, more randomly every 5 seconds or so and then sometimes will settle down completely.

did you check your wire colors? the old speed sensor will have different wire colors and not the purple/yellow that it should have.
