I have a 1996 SPI (580) single carb which hasnt been run for two years, which i bought with the engine out.
replaced the engine and it starts and runs for no longer than 3 minutes during which time theres a fair bit of white smoke out the back and oil coming from the exhaust. After the 2-3 minutes, its like no fuel gets in and the motor stops. When you check the fuel lines then, little or no fuel coming out. If you then turn it over, it will not start although it is sparking. It will, after turning over loads of times start with the choke but, as soon as you put the choke back in, it dies. At that point, fuel is coming through the fuel lines. The bore pressures are 150/150 so are apparently good. The Carb has been rebuilt and holds pressure on the diaphragm
I've had it mentioned that it could be either the crankshaft oil seals, which are letting air in, or the rotary valve as it attaches to the crankshaft...both interfering with the timing. When it does run, it runs fine apart from the white smoke and oily deposit left all over the jet pump and surround.
I have taken the engine out again, just want to be sure what to rebuild :willy_nilly:

Can anyone help coz its driving me crazy? Many Thanks in advance and no, I dont wanna set light to it just yet! :)

Does it still have gray fuel lines? If it does, that is your prob. Replace all of them, and clean out the system.

If they have been changed... check the in-line filter, and the fuel select valve. One of them is going to be plugged.

As far as your smoke... yes, the center crank seals can be bad, and can be causing the smoke... but these engines smoke until they get run for a few minutes, so I wouldn't worry about it until you get a good run on the engine.

Thanks

Thanks very much Tony (Dr Honda).

It still has the grey fuel lines, i had read some stuff about them causing problems would never have thought that it would have been the problem in this case. Would that also cause the oily exhaust....and i mean, it really was running a lot of black oil out?
Also, when it was turning over after it had stopped running, it just refused to start but, there was definitely fuel coming through the lines. Hopefully your suggestion will do the trick but, do you think I need the crank rebuilt like I am being advised?

At the risk of taking your help for granted, is there any fuel line that you would recommend to replace the stock grey ones??

Once again, thanks...You're a star! :)

replaced the fuel lines, cleaned filter and gave the carb a full rebuild with new rebuild kit today.
Will give it a try over the next few days and post whether it worked or not. The car was full of s**t, so keeping the fingers crossed

Did you reuse the same little springs inside the carbs, where the needle assy is? If not, and used ones from the "rebuild" kit, your gonna have to tear carbs back off and install the old ones.

the rebuild kit came with three springs in, one of which was exactly the same as the one that had come out of the carb, just painted in yellow. I used the new one so, will have to keep the fingers crossed
Hopefully it will be ok....

If you changed the spring... and you didn't test your pop-off... there is a high probability of pulling the card back off.

If you used an actual Mikuni rebuild kit, and you used the same color spring... you will be fine. If you used an aftermarket kit... it's not going to run right. The aftermarket kits save you some $$$ but they parts aren't exactly right.

But... I wish you the best. (keeping fingers crossed)

Some may look like thee exact same, but that gram spring is different...He really needs to install the old oem one, in my opinion...beat'n a dead horse if he doesnt.

Hey thankls you guys. i bought it as a Mikuni rebuild kit but, it appears it was mad by Micky Mouse industries.
As such, I'll pull the carb tomorrow and change the spring back to the original thank f*** I didnt throw all the old stuff away!!
Anyway, will do it on monday now.....that thing called work has a tendency to interfere with your free time unfortunately.
Will post back how i get on

Once again...Thanks :)

If you got the old diaphrams, i'd use those as well, if they're still "flimbsy". Your new "mickey mouse" ones, probably has longer "tabs" in the middle, causing havoc to the n/s assy.

Looks like Mickey Mouse industries came up trumps.

Put the old spring back. Turned the ski over today and it leaped into life with absolutely no problems whatsoever.

Considering a Seadoo main dealer was telling me to have a bottom end rebuild, I'm shocked!! :o

Once again, thanks to Seadooya and Dr Honda......a great help :)
