I just received my 787 RFI engine back from SES after a 7 month wait. I am working on the install and decided to check if the counterbalance had the required 1 OZ. of 30w motor oil. I removed the plug and found no oil drained out. I did notice quite a bit of grease on the plug and fill cap. Is grease a sufficient substitute for the 1 OZ. of oil? Should I add the 1 OZ. of oil into the reservoir with the grease?

I've not heard of using grease instead of oil, it might be assembly lube. I think I would call SES after all it's their warranty.

I can see alot of assembly lube ( white colored grease ) on the crank. This grease in the C/B is red colored it looks like synthetic grease. I wil call and see what they say.

Grease is bad. The RPM's are too high for grease and gears. That's why Rotax specs oil.

Personally... I'd contact SES, and see what's the deal.

But... I'm glad you thought about it. The gears don't last long without oil.

i think the oil was in there, but, they had motor so long it probably evaporated -- -- just kidding, i would just pull fill plug, put about 2 - 3 oz in there, turn motor over by hand a few revolutions, then pull drain plug and tilt it and let all that drain out for a couple days, -- then put 1 oz oil in it ....

I'd call. I asked about this on my 951s. He said they were ready to install. I don't think I actually checked though.
