Seadoo XP Bogging Down

Hey All

Just an update

So i found a very good mechanic that worked on my friends ski

He played with the carbs a bit but no joy, he picked up that fuel was favouring only one carb so he suspected maybe a crank case gasket

So he went and pulled the engine out yesterday

He stripped it down and found 1 problem, the rear crank seal was bust

The front and middle was still okay

He replaced the seal and putting the engine back in today

If it still doesn't work then he will replace the crank case gasket

I really hope this was the problem

What would be the symtoms of a gone rear crank seal ?

If the crank is suffering from lubrication issues, and cannot rotate properly, I guess it could? Maybe one of the pros here could chime in...

I will say one thing, and I know u said this is a friend's guy, but id ask to see the damage before he fixes it, because seals are one of those things that mechanics like to replace, esp the labour intensive ones, like that, so they can charge big $ with a low parts cost.

Typically when a crank seal is bad it will rev to the moon at idle b/c of the air leak.

Tell that guy to make dang sure the rest of that crank is in good shape....the 951 cranks are so underengineered its not even funny.

hmmm, and hes having an issue hitting max RPM, so I wouldnt imagine that he had a crank seal problem? Sounds like yet another @$$hole mechanic?

Yeah, took taking the entire engine out just to replace this seal :-(

He did show me the old one, was pretty bad

He called me when he had the crank case open, the balance shaft was 2 teeth out from the crank so he fixed that

Engine seems a lot smoother on idle and revs nice and quick :-)

I really hope this was it coz i had to cough up some major cash for it

The revs where hunting a bit before i sent it to him

Ski sounds like it has power now but then again it's still on the trailer

On startup, idles at 2k RPM then settles on about 1.5k RPM once warm, is this okay ?

Will hopefully get a chance to take it to the dam on sunday and do the ultimate test, on the water

On a side note, on my original few posts i mentioned that my VTS and fuel gauge where on even when the DES key was pulled off

Now after having the engine taken out and put back, it works like it's supposed to :-)

Did he perform an exorcism? LOL there really isnt a reason that would have been resolved by him doing anything to the motor...

Lol, he said that he doesn't remember disconnecting 1 ground wire. When he put the engine back in, he connected all the wires back

Seems that whoever worked on the engine last, forgot to connect it lol

Well thats not possible...the main ground wire goes from the battery to the motor, then the MPEM gets ground from the stator and other wires bolted to the side of the mag.

On top of that...if those didnt switch off that usually means that the MPEM isnt turning off the purple...or "switched" 12v+.

So now that guy is just lying...lol were there voodoo dolls all over? ;)

In other words...he performed and electrical exorcism because that makes zero sense.

Lol, i have no idea

All i know is that it's working :-)

Lol, no dolls that i could see ;-)

LOL just having some fun at your expense!!

Let us know how she rips!! Also...after 5-10 mins check the exhaust mani bolts. The torque spec on those is too light...Ive seen them rattle loose.

Hi Guys

Finally made it to the dam today, weather didn't hold up last weekend

So I hop on and take it easy for about 30 seconds or so then floor it

It immediately plains and pulls nicely

K so here's the problem, the bogging down has stopped :-)

It revs till 5000 - 55000 rpm and 40-45 mph

It just does not want to go any more than that :-(

Dropped it back at the mechanic this evening, he has an idea as to what's the problem so will know tomorrow

He will water test it tomorrow after he's done and will take it from there

Sounds like your rave valves need to be cleaned, i know my xp was topping out around 5500 until i cleaned them and that took care of that

Thanks, are you talking ave the rave valves ?

He did ask me to check it when I phoned him from the dam

All I could confirm was that it was moving freely, when u push that black part down it does come up a bit slowly

Not sure if that's normal

That is normal but you need to remove the bellows(black part with the spring around it) then unbolt the 2 bolts holding the bracket, remove the bracket holding the rave valve in place. Pull out the rave. If there is built up residue on the rave it can cause it to stick. Clean up the residue and that could fix your problem. Go to the how to tech section, there is a good write up on how to do it. To clean the rave you will either need a wire wheel or scotch brite pads. You can do this yourself very easily and not have to pay the mechanic

It is good to make this yearly maintenance also you may want to replace the oring and gaskets for it. If the oring feels hard replace it

Thanks :-)

Will definitely check when i get it back

I must say tho, even tho i couldn't go top speed. I had a blast wipping it in the corners

this ski is crazy fun

It probably hasn't been replaced before

Do you get rebuild kits for them like how you get for the carbs ?

It's funny how the smallest things cause the biggest problems
