Alright so I have a 1997 seadoo xp and it just recently started not wanting to start. I put the key on and it will start immediately within a few turns of the engine when i am out of the water. Today i backed my trailer up into the lake pressed the start button and it did not start even though i just started it a few minutes before. So i wiggled the key and got it to start the second time. I decided to go out to see what else it would do so i got on, started it up and i was off. After about 2 minutes of riding from idle to full throttle, it all of a sudden cut out on me. I pressed the button and got it to go for about a minute before it cut out on me again. I continued to get shorter and shorter ride time before cutting out until i almost got back to the dock and it would no longer respond. The vts needle would move up when i pressed the start button but nothing would happen and would stay up even after pulling the key. After about 30 seconds, it would then go back down. So i put it back on the trailer and tried to start it up out of water but it wouldnt respond just like it did in the water. Anyone know what is going on?
I am new to the boating world but i will try to answer any question. I did test the battery and it is fine.
It turns over and runs great until it cuts out and then wont start until later when i try it at home. its a 787/800 engine and there are no beeps. I dont think that the buzzer has ever worked in that posh
Also, when it does start even when i clean out the fuel filter it starts within a couple of clicks rather than before where i would have to pull the choke and work to get the fuel back through for about a minute or so. It seems to be starting too fast you know?

People will need more info to help you.
Does it turn over. Im guessing no because of the no response
What sizes engine?
Is it getting hot?
Do you hear beeps?
If you could. Put as much info as you can so people have something to start diagnose what it's doing for you.

based on what you have said so far, sounds like one thing it could be is a bad ground wire

You have two issues.
1. DESS post or key
2. Fix the beeper

If your beeper was working, you could identify issues much easier. Q

Lick the key before installing it. No joke. The contact points.

I agree, I have had 5 skis now & 4 of them had bad beepers. Many people ride without them, but you really need it for not only the DSS beeps but the overheat temp sensor. Starting a ski in the water is much different than on the trailer. when you say it won't start, does it not turn over? are you getting clicks from the starter solenoid, or no clicks at all? Spins over from the starter, but won't fire? Sure sounds like electrical, but you could have other things going on too. I would also make sure your not starving it from fuel.

Okay so i have fixed the beeper and when i press the start button 5 times i get a single loud beep. Then when i put my dess key on, i can sometimes if i listen right next to the beeper hear two very faint beeps/clicks. After unplugging it and plugging it back in, there will be no beeps and when i press the start button, i get a single loud beep.
This is after i cleaned my connection with an eraser. Seems like a bad connection betweenthe post and key do you think?

It still sounds like you have a buzzer problem. Did you replace it? The two beeps when you install the key are much shorter than the single beeps. The buzzers can be intermittent, & can also make very faint sounds like your hearing. you should get two beeps each time you install the key, if you get a single long beep from pushing the start button, that indicates a bad connection to the key, no key, or possibly the wrong key. Sure sounds like your on the right track, but I still think you might have a buzzer issue & thats not helping you figure out the DESS key problem.

I have figured out that i can put the key on and take it off for about six times and hear the two faint beeps. Once i did hear one faint and one loud beep both the same length. I put the key on for the 7th time or so and then no faint beeps, nothing at all. I press the start button then and instead of it beginning to turn over, it beeps. One single loud beep. Its not long, it just is a short beep like it should beep when i put the key in but just one of them
