Seadoo 951 GTX DI botton End Rebuild

Well I started putting the bottom end together, and thought I had done pretty well .... so I had all 24 bolts in and sat back and re-read the manual ...

Damn, a little sentance that says 'If your balance shaft has a hole in the bearing, then make sure this hole is facing down' Damn Damn Damn ....

I think it is, but cannot be 100% sure, so when I bought the jet pump oil from Seadoo, I ask them, and they said if the manual say's it, then I would do it ...

So tomorrow it is all coming apart again ..... for the sake of some gasket paste and threadlocker it would be worth checking ... right??


Anyway, when I put it back together again tomorrow, could someone tell me how much lubrication I put in ... I have no benchmark:

1. should the case be free from oil before we start (ie where the bearings sit, should these be oiled first, with 2 sroke, penrite lube or other, or left dry (first time I oiled) ?

2. Once the crank and balance go in, before I close it up, should I dribble oil over the bearings (making sure to keep the surfaces clean for sealing) (first time, little dribble)?

3. Should I put assemble lube anywhere, if so where and how... should I squeeze it in the end bearings and everywhere, or just wipe surfaces with it (couldnt find anywhere to put it, use 2 stroke everywhere) ;

4. Once closed, should I feed any oil down the holes by the pistons, to lubricate once the bottom gasket is dry... I knwo the manual say have 10ml 2 stroke in the crank before I put the bores on, but this is the only mention of lubrication (nothing done 1st time).

Sorry, I am a bit paranoid for teh first time ....

When I put a bottom half together... I put a little grease on any seal... and a few drops of 2-stroke in any bearing. Then... before I button up the engine... I will give a good squirt or 2-stroke oil into each section of the lower half to make sure I have oil on start up. (about half an ounce) You can eave put that down the carb throat before that first start-up.

Then... in the top half... I use grease in the wrist pin bearings... and coat the piston, and Cyl wall in 2-stroke oil.

Thanks for all your help ... A few lessons learned that I will pass on:

Bottom end

1. The damn slip ring bearing on the balance shaft says a hole should point up (if you have one) which is down if the engine is being built upside down

2. As Dr says grease and oil in the bottom end. Don't forget to grease the inside of the end seals before you slide them on the crank;

Other than this 24 bolts and 2 sets of torquing later and we are done. Items to note: paint stripper cleans old thread locker of bolts a treat.

Top end

1. Circlips a real pain... The manual said down ... The piston box said up ... I went with up.

2. Putting the bore over the rings a pain ... May need four hands here....

3. Then just torque up and done ...

4. If the bore has been bored ... You need to get rave valves shaved

5. I primed the oil pump with oil in a tube and the electric drill trick before I put the mag end on so there was no wait when the engine started, and oil was at the crank from min 1...

6. Bleed oil pump before you put the exhaust on....

7. Now for the pipes ... Make sure you get them all... Especially the oil pipe under the engine and the water pipe behind the engine ... Anyway double double check before you put any other parts on or tighten the engine.

8. I found a 15mm spanner works fine on the exhaust nut if you drop the carb (like carbs) under the nut ... Take of the filter and loosen jubilee clips ...

9. Grease the pto end before you put the engine in you may not be able to get to it again

10. If you just get a beep and a click ... Charge the battery ...

Good luck ... It started for me with NO previous exp ... I think I have a rattle, so will try and post a video of that.
