A 96 GSX is a great ski! Lou will back me on this. Don't ask David, he tried to get rid of his... But we talked him out of it. But seriously, the GSX would be great. Just swap motors and you will have almost a full spare ski worth of parts. Is the GSX a good price?

yes!!!! It's a bit rough though. Seat is pretty torn up and it's pretty sun faded but that all works in my favor when negotiating a price.

I have an awesome 96 GSX With low hours I could sell you. Joke, I actually really like that ski. As my friend and fellow soccer coach stated Lou will back is up on that. They are fun all around great ski's with a great hull design.

They are great skis, probably the best all around hull Seadoo produced. But, it's not going to give you the thrill that your 97 SPX does

96 XP800!
Keep the 2 strokes alive!

fly to Kansas City, buy my 97 spx, mint condition, $1,200, rent uhaul, part out your rough ski = ready to go ski less than $1,000 ;)

I basically told the guy I'm not looking to spend more than $200. Judging on the condition of it, I'll probably offer $100.

So far good news on this spare engine I've got. Started pulling the exhaust, carbs etc. getting ready to pull it. I was able to look in and get a little view of the crank and connecting rods. At first I thought the rods were rusted then I realized that's just the color they are. The crank looks good and I don't see any signs that any silt or water was sitting in there. When I finally pull the engine, I'm still going to investigate further, but from what I saw last night, it is a good sign. Engine is EASILY turned by hand as well.

Yeah you'll never know till its all apart. Any pitting at all on bearing surfaces is no good. Esp on higher HP motors. If we were talking a 580 it would last a bit longer with pitting. 787 or 951...not so much.

I guess the only way to truly tell is to split the case then, huh?

Actually, we do have a borescope here at my work I could borrow. It would allow me to see inside the engine without completely disassembling it. I may try that first.

I'd expect wear in the top end should be easy to spot.If you had some blank off plates you could do a 5psi crankcase pressure decay leak check to see if the crank seals are leaking. Leaky crank seals could wipe out the new top end, so it's full-circle back to a judgement call.

Went and saw the GSX yesterday and passed on it. It was in absolutely horrid condition and the engine bay had a good 4-5 inches of water just sitting in in there. Would have needed a lot more than just an engine swap I'm afraid.

I really dint mind doing a bit of cosmetic work but this thing was in ridiculously bad shape. I'm not sure I would have even taken it for free.
