Yeah, this particular one was found instead of stolen I guess, still I wouldn't want anything to do with it unless it has passed through a law enforcement agency auction or something like that.

Come to think of it, law enforcement agencies auction off unclaimed stuff all the time, don't they? I know I've bought stuff that way before.

This one was lost in a flood and then found later by its owner. I even got a title (with his name on it) with it. I know it is not stolen.

Where do you work? Sounds like a fun place!

I work at a marina and there's always some kind of drama going on. If it's not houseboats on fire or repossessed boats area being broken into and boats sliding down the hill into the water trailer and all, it's someone getting their head blown off.

Most times it is fun, other times it's damn scary.

Then you're completely legit and morally can do whatever you want with any of it, IMO. Since you've got titles there should be no problem swapping stuff around, all except hull numbers, which isn't what you're doing anyway. :)

Used bare hulls are basically worthless, I no longer part out skis, but I would have paid someone to take the hulls away to save me the work of cutting them up and hauling to the dump.

The problem as you already know is that you need a bare hull with title. That will be a little harder to find.

So him popping his HIN on a completely stripped worthless identical 97 Spx 20 year old hull is wrong?

Yes its wrong but............... people do it on wrecked hulls during a swap. I wouldn't post about it though.

I wouldn't say it's wrong, I'd say it's illegal. Let's say he bought a new hull though that didn't come with a tag, I suppose he could affix the tag from his old hull, right?

I'd be happy to find a ski with a blown 787 that someone just wanted out of their yard and will let me take it for a couple hundred bucks. Then, I'd just swap the engines out. But if I can get ahold a bare hull for free or next to nothing, I don't mind taking on a complete transplant either.

Ps. Post an ad on CL. That you want a project ski and list the models you want. Be very specific. You will be surprised at the responses. Include a pic of your convertible. I have picked up 3 really good deals that way before and two of them came with free trailers.

Give my brother Jess a call ( 99spxxx ) If he doesnt have anything for you right this second, he can give you a call when something comes in.

Titles and HIN swapping is def a grey area for some, but in all reality were talking about sub $2000 machines. if you feel things are on the up and up and you are going to save a nice hull that had no paperwork...go for it. Otherwise a parts guy is just gonna strip it and it will end up in the dump.

I dont know why the government makes it so hard to take care of these issues; they could easily set up some sort of system where a previous owner could be contacted to say it was sold long ago and clear things. All they want is the tax/registration money anyways, and it would keep more machines in use.

Well the compression isn't what I wanted it to be. Only 120 each cylinder. That's on its last leg then, huh?

Honestly, that engine probably needs a good once over anyway. Since it was in a flood, I should check the crank case for silt and the like.

Yep, 120psi is low for an 787 but have you started and run it yet? Someone said their brand new reman from SES was only blowing 120psi and TOM told them that's the pressure he expected.

I guess what I'm saying is if it's been rebuilt the rebuilder may have detuned it slightly.

One thing that comes to mind is supposedly they become hard to start in the water if compression is too low.

Question: I did the comp check without warming up the engine to operating temperature. Should I warm up the engine and redo it??? Might squeeze some more psi out of it.

I have heard the same thing, on my other GSX I
It came in at 120, started fine on the trailer. I opted for a top end, it's really not a hard job on these motors, part of the reason I like them so much! I I did mine in the ski, if the motors out then....

Don't stress yet. If it's even in both holes Id suspect the gauge. Try a new one

96 XP800!
Keep the 2 strokes alive!

What about getting the engine to operating temp and trying again? The engine was completely cold when I got 120

It's rare to have both cylinders drop evenly in compression. If they are both dead on 120 your probably ok.
Did you do fuel off throttle wide open when testing?
