Get the ski running starts no problem. Shut it off try again np. Turn it off again let it sit and decided just to turn it over one more time and all I get is the starter spinning but not turning the flywheel. F... Figured the c clip I jigged up last year broke to hold the spring and gear on. Nope... To my amazement see pics.

Wtf... Only my luck.

Mine did the same thing, except mine was a Nippon Denso starter, at least that is what racer told me. It certainly is interesting. Not sure how it happens. Just replace and move on thats about all you can do

I actually had a spare starter with a broken housing, so I pretty much just swapped around some parts and had a good working starter. I was lucky because my spare was the exact same starter...

Problem is my oem is hurting pretty good. I thought I could swap the sbt brush (piece at the back of the starter with the magnets) with my oem one. Well the little wire attached to the back of the oem casing that is attached to a little magnet broke off when trying to put it back together. (Pain in the ass btw). It was just holding on. How can I fix that? Trying to see what Minn has for me. Oh and need a bendix because my oem one is so warn it gets stuck on the flywheel. Where it all began. urg!

I will just buy a new OEM one if I can find out from where.

Listen to the squirrel just go oem and spare yourself the headaches if you can find a decent used oem giver and just take it to a starter/alternator shop and have them rebuild it.

Ya, what I should have done prior to this. Got my OEM fixed up or replaced. I emailed SBT to see if they will do anything about it (doubt it), but in the mean time figuring out an OEM one. I'm not back to my cottage for a few weeks, so need it figured by then. Oh and the back bracket that is mounted to the block snapped at the bolt so need a new one of those as well. bah

Edit: Do ALL OEM starters have Denso stamped on them? Wondering if the one that came with my ski is actually OEM or not. The Bendix says on the side made in Brazil. But no Denso or other stampings I can see on it. Thx!

UPDATE:

I talked to SBT about this issue, and because I had a problem with the starter before (c clip breaking) they warrantied it "out of good faith" as they call it. I just had to pay for shipping. So not to bad and again they are awesome with their warranty!!

I also ordered an OEM starter, cause that is what everyone is talking about and didn't want to bother with a used one and couldn't get a used one off the guys on here. Everyone seems out except ebay and meh. And with Parker Yamaha, they have a great deal on them for you guys down there. Up here it is $100 more. However, UPS is the biggest POS shipping company and rip us off on brokerage fees. Fedex way better, cheaper and faster.

Also ordered 2 brand new OEM brackets off of ebay, and also an extra one from SBT. Reason being, BRP doesn't make them anymore and I'm starting my backup of parts lmao.

Here are some pics of my current OEM starter. Can anyone tell me if it actually OEM or not?

Edit: SBT sent me the starter for RFI (9 bendix), this will work on a 787 carb? I know OEM is 8 bendix.

I'm gunna guess, with the made in brazil stamp it's probably not but I do know they made OEM remanufactured ones in black

Thumper- I'm with you on UPS being the shits. When i was looking at who to ship my crankshaft core down to the states.. I was between fedex and UPS..On the website they were a dollar difference, and UPS is right up the road from me, so for the dollar, it was worth it. I get there, start filling out half the paperwork, and she rings me through for 15$ MORE than what they quoted. I asked why the drastic change from the quote online. Clerk said "Oh we just keep that there to stay competitive. We don't actually use those rates..."

And I chose the 5 buisness day option "guarenteed".. mailed on may 11, arrived on the 20th. Called UPS and asked why the 4 day delay, they said the boarder held them...only i had checked the tracking info, and it was only at the boarder for 3 hours. And when it got to the shop, the guy called me up and said "miraculously your crank was undamaged, but your shipping company beat the hell out of the package." Lets just say I will no longer use them for anything ever again. (end rant ) lol

No Crap. Wow.... Unfortunately I had no choice but to go with them. I emailed parker yamaha and let them know they need to change that.

Usps imo is still the best way to ship up here. Just got a $45 value package, no taxes, no brokerage fee. Nothing. And it took the same amount of time to get for a quarter of the shipping cost.

My starter did the exact same yesterday! Mine had the 9 tooth bendix on (96 gsx carb'd) which seemingly worked fine, are you 100% that carbd motors were 8 tooth only? Im not sure which one to order now!

I know I'm late to the game here.... but what you are seeing is 100% normal.

ALL AFTER MARKET STARTERS SUCK !!!!!!! (for PWC) If the shaft doesn't break... it will throw the windings.

I will always recommend cleaning an OEM. A brush and bearing kit is less than $30.

I honestly don't think if an 8 or 9 matters.

Doc... If the starter my ski came with was oem I would have fixed it forsure. And didn't want to buy someone else's broken one.

Least now I have a back up so no real down time (I hope) in the future.

I understand.

Personally... I would sell the starter that SBT sends you. (you can get almost a new price on ebay for it) then buy a used OEM. If it comes from a good source... it will probably be fine. At the worst... open it, clean it, and replace the brushes. It will last for another +10 years. (as long as it isnt' under water)

I tried to get a good used one, but none of the main guys on here (you included lol) had an extras around. Even tried osd, with no luck. So was eBay or new. And looking at replacing the bendix (if warn) is over $100 for a new one. Figured new from parker yamaha best way to go.

Now I have new Sbt engine, oem starter and odyssey agm battery. I better be good lol.

Some pics of my brand new OEM starter. I put up picks that show the things to look for on OEM starters. So therefore, my old starter definitely wasn't OEM.

SBT sells a bendix for the 787 style starter now. I have had a 787 OEM starter with a bad bendix. It would engage for about two or 3 motor revolutions and then disengage. Caused me a bad day at the lake! A buddy and myself rebuilt my XP starter tonight since I had the pipe off of it. Super easy to do.
