RXT IS 255 stuck in reverse

Hello.

I was troubleshooting my jet ski yesterday and finally found that the reverse gate is stuck. I am trying to figure out how to figure out what is causing it to be stuck. Also what is best way to trouble shoot it. When I press the reverse lever it does not do anything as it is already stuck in reverse. Is there a way to loosen it? Thank you in advance for help.
 
That reverse bucket is comptroller by the computer and uses an electric motor to move. Find that motor and LIGHTLY tap on it with a RUBBER mallet while you're trying hitting the throttle to move the bucket in the up position. This is done on the trailer. Give it a shot and see what happens. I've heard of this happening before but I'm not sure what the fix was. I know some where just stuck and started working fine.
 
In 09 the bucket is fully manually controlled.

What year is your ski?

If yours is manual, you need to determine what part of the linkage is defective.

Yes it is a 2009. I tried to find a motor connection but there isnt one. It is just stuck. I am not quite sure if I need to trace a cable because I have looked in there and do not see one. I have tried banging it a little to try to get it unstuck thinking it might be a bolt. Any other idea what to look for? Thanks in advance.

I assume the lever moves up and down? Not stuck in the up position,,,

I'm on my phone so I can't really look at the manual right now.

If the lever moves, you need to open things up enough to see what end the linkage has failed on.

Is the lever loose and free floating or locked in place? Have you physically tried to manually manipulate the gate at the stern? what were the results? I'm thinking linkage more so than a cable issue.

The lever is free and able to be pressed. Not loose. I have physically tried to push the reverse gate up and it is stuck. Did not want to push too hard in case something messed up. It just seems there is no response from the lever at all and it is just a locked down gate. Thanks.
 
Ok, disconnect the reverse cable assembly at the gate and see if that frees the gate up. Im guessing it's a 10mm bolt. That will isolate the problem. It should be on the port side in clear view, right above a large spring. Be aware that with the gate in the down position the spring is 'loaded' so when you remove the cable, keep control of the gate. If the gate is now free you can focus the troubleshoot on the cable or the lever assy.

Ok. I am now in the process of removing the ride plate to get to the whole assembly. It is proving to be a major pain to get off. However, a new development is that now when I press the reverse lever it seems nothing happens on the guage. It would used to say R but now there is no sign of any gear on the screen. I am wondering if there is some electronic sensor link that is broken. but first I will try to disconnect to cable assembly. Thanks.

We are in the midst of a miscommunication. Ride plate removal should not be required to perform the task i had in mind. Also if you are experiencing an electronic glitch I am not on the same page as you. I was under the impression this was a manually operated reverse not computer controlled per post #3.
Lets stop and let me review
 
ohh ok. no ride plate removal. phew. in that case does that mean i should remove the front of the reverse gate to get in there. I just cant see into the jet area and work anywhere. I know there is a cable cause was looking at the service manual. I am just trying to figure out how to get to it. Thanks.
 
Part of the learning curve to working on these units is familiarity. Once you get you head wrapped around the subject matter, some of this stuff isnt as complicated as first thought.
Im assuming your RXT is on a trailer or shop cart?. If so, while sitting on yer bum directly behind the unit you're staring at the gate in the down position. Even then you should be able to see on the left hand (port)side of the gate/nozzle and recognize the cable connection. It has the appearence of a long small stainless steel rod that slides back and forth in its own housing, and is connected the the nozzle assy. You might see it better if you grab the gate and pivot it starboard
 
I'm a bit lost myself. You have a manual bucket. Where is the R for reverse on a gauge that you are taking about?

Don't remove the ride plate. As mentioned above it should not be required. And if you ever do need to do so it is ONE HELL OF A JOB. It actually calls for a hydroponic jack and metal plates to get it off. No fun.

I have the service manual at home. It will be later tonight, but I can look up the correct removal procedure then.
 
do you have a couple pictures, maybe of the reverse bucket.. the lever.. and where the "R" pops up on the screen... i think this would clear up ALOT of confusion were having.. usually the R shows when you have an ibr model if im correct..
 
Yes it is an IBR model. It is the RXT-IS 255. I have been messing with it all day trying to find the connections. I have disconnected the harness and checked all that. I have also tried loosening some of the bolts on the gate. Yea I pretty much gave up on the ride plate. I will take some pictures hopefully to clear up some confusion. Thank you everybody for all your help. I just really want to solve this if I can without the shop. Since the shop down here is always shortstaffed and they take months to fix anything. I really appreciate everybody.

Serious communication issue.

You led us to believe you had a MANUAL bucket.

Now you are saying you have an IBR / IS ski
This makes a huge difference.

You do not have a "lever" you have a brake/reverse/neutral handle.

Need to rethink this.

is the reverse bucket still stuck with the machine on ??? if i remember correctly the reverse grate will go down when the machine is off

Yes the gate is still stuck in the down position even when the machine is on. As soon as I put it in the water it just keeps going reverse. Just to be clear. The motor is what the IBR harness is going into right? I dont want to just go bangin on everything.
As a side note I did remove the whole reverse gate unit. and I unscrewed the steel rod that "door" was talking about. Now I can see the whole unit more clearly. I will try banging on the motor a little bit to see if something starts moving. Please advise which one is the motor. I have an idea but want to be clear. Thanks all so much.
 
Ok,, I am in the manual..

First, the IBR does NOT work unless the ski is running (as per the manual. It does not state if it will work if you just have the DESS in place and not running). Thus, I think it needs to be running..

There is a IBR Override that you access through the console/dash. Once it is overridden, the gate raises to the top to allow for access to and through the nozzle area. My thoughts are, this will at least get the nozzle up and let you see if the motor and what not is working.

1). Press Start/Stop button.
2). Install tether, do NOT start the ski. (The dash cluster should now be visible and awake).
3). Press MODE button on right handlebar until you get to the SETTINGS option.
4). Press SET to enter the SETTINGS Function.
5). If IBR OVR is not on the screen, press UP/DOWN arrow button until IBR OVR is displayed.
6). Press SET button to enter IBR OVR Function.
7). Press UP/DOWN to display OVR ON.
8). Press the SET Button.
If you have VTS, press the VTS Up or Down to move the gate. Without VTS use the UP/DOWN buttons on the right handle bars.
To deactivate the IBR OVR function, go through the above process, OR, remove the tether and wait 3 minutes for the elctrical to reset itse, OR, Start the ski.

This wont fix your issue, but it will tell you that certain things are working or not working...

So i have tried the test. And i hear noise when i do the override. However, the gate is not lifting. I am now really stumped.
I believe the motor works.

This thing has 39 hours and so many problems.
