Hi, I've read a few of the other threads on this topic, but mine is slightly different. It's a 2001 model.

The battery voltage is good at 12.7v and the ignition comes on when I put the DESS key on, with 2 beeps as it should, and the fuel pump goes briefly. However, when I press the start button, the solenoid clicks briefly but then all the power completely goes off (dash display etc goes off).

I checked the voltage from battery +ve to engine to check the earth lead, still showing 12.7v, but I also put a jump lead on from battery -ve to the engine as an extra earth, just to rule out a bad connection there. It's still the same with that on, and the battery voltage stays steady around 12.7v when the ignition is on and the start button is pressed, so it's not the battery.

After this has happened, I have to wait a few minutes before the ignition will come back on. If I take the key off and put it back on soon after, nothing comes on, but after I wait a few minutes, the ignition comes back on as it should.

But, after I've now done this several times, the ignition won't come on at all (battery voltage still fine). I've checked all 6 of the fuses in the little box at the front and they're all fine.

Anyone have any ideas now?

First, pull off the PTO and make sure the engine is still loose. Then jump the solenoid with a pliers and make sure the engine turns over. If it does, then there is something else wrong.

I would go with battery has voltage but no amperage, but it could be many things.

Off hand, it does sound like a amperage issue. Which more often than not is a connection issue.

There are a few MUST have good connections. On the positive side, battery to solenoid, solenoid to starter. On the ground side, battery to engine. If these are not VERY good connections, it is like trying to start the ski using a very small wire. Still have 12 volts or more but no power to push the volts.

Hi, thanks for that. I did check the connections and all seem to be very good and the starter turns the engine over ok. The problem is the ignition, dash clocks, etc seemed to be turning off straight away, just as the solenoid engaged - it wasn't even on long enough to turn the engine over. But then I'd have to wait a few minutes before it would restore the ignition power, which is odd - it wouldn't do it straight away like it normally would. But then after a little while it's now stopped turning the power on at all - no dash clocks, nothing!

it sounds to me like your having dess post issues. try cleaning the post and the dess key. does it take aprox 30 seconds for the dash to turn off?

Its def possible but on this model I think you have an issue with the relay box. I unfortunately cant tell you where its at, but I know its in there.

I havent had much time with the DIs.

Thanks for your help guys, it turned out to be the main positive lead. The wire had corroded badly at the crimp terminal, battery end, but still had a connection so seemed ok when I tested it. It wasn't until I physically waggled the wire, which was when I noticed it.

All fixed now though, but I still have to take it to the shop anyway because the service light has just come on!

Thanks again
